Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 22, 2004 5:53 pm We have a bathroom with slate on the walls and floor. It's a good finish in many ways but makes the room dark. Could we paint it with enamel paving paint, or whitewash it? That would retain the interesting texture but lighten the room.
I trawled the web looking for answers. A home reno site said not to paint slate floors - too subject to movement - or fireplaces - but that could have been because of the heat. Re: Can I paint slate? 3Sep 07, 2004 8:28 pm HEY HARLEY
THERE ARE A FEW POSSIBLE WAYS TO DO THIS BUT THEY ARE NOT BY THE BOOK BUT SHOULD BE OK. THERE A FEW PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET 1. VIPONDS RAPID DRY UNDER COAT (OIL BASED) AND 2. ZINSSER B.I.N. (METHO BASED) THESE CAN BE APPLIED TO THE SLATE AFTER A LIGHT SAND OR STEEL WOOL. THIS SHOULD SHOULD GIVE YOU A SURFACE THAT WILL ALLOW OTHER PAINT TO STICK. ONCE AGAIN THIS IS NOT DONE BY THE BOOK AND A TEST SPOT SHOULD BE DONE FIRST AND NOT RECOMENDES FOR HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS LIKE FLOORS BUT OTHER THAN THAT YOU SHOULD BE OK ALL THE BEST EGGENZ 2004 Slate as a bathroom floor 4Sep 15, 2004 2:02 pm Hi - agree white walls would create a nice contrast. I am thinking of laying slate on our bathroom/toilet floors with some light coloured walls. Do you guys have any views on whether it is an appropriate flooring material for these areas. I like the fact that it is dark and won't show up the dirt as easily - but I am concerned about how easy it is to clean, I'm not a fan of grout. Hoping to install underfloor heating to counteract the cold in winter. Any advice re slate or recommended alternatives for bathroom flooring would be appreciated. Thanks. Re: Can I paint slate? 5Jan 08, 2006 4:23 pm If your still thinking of putting slate on the floor in a wet area, dont do it. Its not for water, will turn it white and scummy looking and cant scrub it out. the slate is too flakey and porous even if it looks firm it will let water in. Probably ok on walls where it wont get wet. Mine looked great for about 2 years but Ive had 10 years of it really horrible. Im looking on this site for advice about painting it black again.
Regards helen I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3339 To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even. To install most types of… 1 399 just pull up the slate. If you go over the top, your tiles would not have an even surface to be glued to. Im no tiler, but i can imagine a couple of things being an issue… 1 342 |
