Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 28, 2009 1:56 pm Hi all... I have just been advised by my builder of a problem with the shower niche I upgraded to and my bathroom layout: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Basically, the shower niche would have to go in an external wall (on the right of the picture) but this cannot be done. It was suggested that I put the niche on the internal wall (at the top of the picture) and the showerhead/taps on the external wall, but somehow this doesn't feel right to me. I'm trying to figure out another way to have my cake and eat it too (so to speak). I've thought about moving the door to the wardrobe side and shuffling things around, but it's hard!. Help!! Any ideas?? P. Re: Help! Bathroom layout.. 2Sep 28, 2009 7:24 pm I don't know why PD won't do niches on external walls - other builders do. I had my heart set on niches in our showers, since I cannot stand shampoo bottles and the like on the floor, and I hate those caddy things that always rust... But we couldn't fit a niche into either of our showers without it being on an exterior wall, so I'm still looking for the perfect shelf or other solution. I think it may be because niches are built into thicker walls, and it's easy to modify an internal wall. But I don't see why you can't just have a shallower niche? Anyway, that doesn't help you with your problem... I thought of a possible solution after our house was built (of course): We could have built a thicker section of wall to about 1.2m or so, and a standard wall above that height. That would create a "step" running across the shower wall, so you'd have a kind of tiled shelf for all your bits and pieces ....if you know what I mean. Here's a really bad sketch to give you an idea: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Not a niche, but maybe it would do the job? Re: Help! That's actually a really good idea (sorry... don't mean to rub it it ) I spent most of last night with little cut outs of paper trying to move the door/shower/toilet/vanity around and I couldn't make it work. I really, REALLY don't want to give up my shower niche (sad, aren't I?). Can anyone 'name' a builder that does do niche's on external walls?? Maybe I can mention this to PD and see what they say?? P. Re: Help! Bathroom layout.. 4Sep 29, 2009 10:35 am I think Donuts and SuH have shower niches on external walls... There was a discussion about it a while back, no idea where though. Re: Help! I never wanted a niche, I wanted a place to put my foot up so I could shave my legs easier, and it stretches across the length the shower wall so there is plenty of space to put bottles, soap/soap dish, etc. I dont think I have any pictures of it yet, but tomorrow I'll go get some if you'd like to see what it looks like. EDIT: Sorry, I should have mentioned it's built low on the wall, not quite knee height. Re: Help! Bathroom layout.. 9Oct 11, 2009 3:44 pm You're welcome Just keep in mind, I think with something like this below the showerheads, you might need to pay extra attention when cleaning, it's probably a good place for mold/mildew to grow. It's something to consider when determining the height you might want the ledge. Possibly both depending on the sizing. Idea of working from the centre is that you dont have a 20mm thin tile at one end and a 400mm at the other end. A quick search on… 3 8408 You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn.
