Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 23, 2009 7:10 pm This is the bathroom in the house I am buying... http://www.realestate.com.au/objects//p ... 905084.jpg Me, my mum nor the real estate guy, could work out why there is all the strange wasted space around the bath (the unnecessary gap filling). The only guess we have is that there was exposed plumbing, or the bath originally was freestanding but has been boxed in (i'm thinking its the second option). Anyways my plan is going to be a total stripping and redoing of this room. Its a very small space. I'm thinking of moving the basin to the wall at the end of the room opposite the bath. Not sure yet. The bath appears to be a classic which I'm thinking of either selling or respraying. Not sure yet. There is already a separate toilet off the laundry at the back of the house. Should I put in a 2nd toilet? There is some strange pipes protruding from the exterior of the back wall, that don't match up to the basin, and indicate that the toilet was originally in the room anyway. So if thats the case it probably won't be too hard to link a new one up. The mirror I like. It is fixed into the old window (this used to be the external wall of the back of the house, before the verandah was closed in) and I think it looks really awesome. what do you think? Any other ideas for a small bathroom area reno?? thanks. Re: what to do with bathroom? 3Oct 01, 2009 6:38 pm One of the best ways to decorate your small bathroom would be to make use of mirrors. Apart from making the room look interesting, they would also create the illusion of space. While using accessories for your bathroom, try to limit their number to a minimum. For instance, one large piece of art would look much better than several small ones. If you have an enclosed shower, try to use plain glass for the door, instead or frosted one or even better, remove the door and install a shower curtain instead (which can be pulled back, creating more space). One thing that you do not need in your bathroom is clutter, which occupies unnecessary space and makes it look smaller than it is. So, chuck out all the items that you do not use on a regular basis. Re: what to do with bathroom? 4Oct 01, 2009 6:51 pm Is the shower over the bath? Appears to be by the curtain and the higher taps Anyway, if possible, yes, I would install a 2nd toilet in there, I think the benifits of haveing a 2nd toilet in bathroom as well as the one off the laundry would be well worth it and good resale point too. Beg to differ about shower curtains, I would go for glass doors any day, clear ones certainly open a space up much more than frosted ones and you can get ones which are built onto bath too, for shower over bath set-ups. Good luck with your renovating - been there, done that, lots of fun Re: what to do with bathroom? 5Oct 02, 2009 7:04 am Agree with Helen re: screens vs. curtains. Would also agree that previously plumbling has been boxed in, esp if bath was originally freestanding. I discovered 2nd toilets are like family rooms; you don't know what you're missing til you've had one. GL HH Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: what to do with bathroom? 6Oct 02, 2009 12:36 pm We have 2 toilets where I'm living at the moment. One in the bathroom and one off the laundry, but the 2nd one doesn't work. and i find it a MAJOR annoyance when someone is in the shower and I need to use the toilet but can't. I think I'd go with glass over a shower curtain. curtains really just annoy me. i'm sure there are other people out there who'd agree. Re: what to do with bathroom? 7Oct 04, 2009 10:46 am Sorry but I am going to go against the grain here. I sold an old weatherboard last year that looks like it could have been from around the same era as this one you are buying. If what we are seeing in the photo is the total area of the bathroom then I wouldn't be looking to squash in another toilet. Unless you have a large family and drastically need it then I think the fact that the existing one is in a separate area means it is accessible when somebody is using the bathroom. You would have to have a tiny handbasin to fit in a toilet and I think it would emphasize how small the room is and give you very little storage room. I also disagree about keeping the existing mirror unless you are going to redo all the frame around it as the left hand side of the frame is missing and draws attention to the fact that there is a bit of a mish mash of fittings and alterations that have occurred in the past. Again I disagree with replacing the curtain. This is a personal thing with me as I used to love having a bath every now and again (hate the new bath I have,) and putting a glass screen up over the bath regardless of whether it is clear or not really does box it in. I remember staying at a hotel in NZ years ago and wanting a bath after a day skiing and it really wasn't a nice feeling closed up in it. I imagine it would also make it a little more awkward bathing kids. You can get some really lovely curtains and brackets these days that make a real feature of this type of set up if you are going to be leaving the house decorating in that era. Of course different scenario if you are going to get rid of the bath and just have a freestanding shower. Overall I am picturing the bath restored and a nice vanity unit with a big mirror over it to help open up the room. I think simplicity is the key when working with a small area. Good luck and keep us informed!! Re: what to do with bathroom? 8Oct 05, 2009 12:47 pm Thanks for the tips I don't think the rest of the window frame is missing, I think it is just covered up. I do think a bigger mirror would be a good idea though. So maybe I'll keep it in mind. Yes it is a fairly small area, perhaps I'll leave out the 2nd loo. Not sure yet. and as for the shower curtain, I'll keep it in mind also. Because at this point I'm just brain storming ideas.
