Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 23, 2009 5:10 pm Hi Guys We are building our dream home in Highlands, Craigieburn (Melbourne). We are unable to decide the size of the shower in the ensuite. I understand bigger is always better but what you guys prefer. How important it is to get a bigger shower i.e. 1200mm X 900mm or should I settle with smaller one i.e. 900mm X 900mm. The builder (Simonds Homes) is asking $1350 additional for the bigger shower. Is it worth spending that much money. Any advice will really help us to reach some decision. Thanks Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 2Sep 23, 2009 5:17 pm I think it depends on what you are after in your ensuite? We have a huge double shower in our main ensuite - 2m by 1m but that is because our two small children shower with us and so space is better. Plus we are having two showerheads - again assisting with the showering of kids. If you do a larger shower is something else going to be reduced to compensate? Ie do you have to have a smaller vanity / toilet has to be in the main room rather then in a separate room etc? Also do you shower more then bath? At the end of the day a 900 x 900 shower is more then adequate - it is what our minor ensuites have but you need to decide what your needs for now and the future will be. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 3Sep 23, 2009 5:23 pm If you do a larger shower is something else going to be reduced to compensate? Thanks for your reply. No, I don't have to compensate with anything but I don't have kids yet. Also, I take more shower than bath. Yeah, in future we are gonna have kids. So you rekon we should go for big shower? Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 4Sep 24, 2009 4:47 pm It sounds like a lot to spend for the extra 300mm of tiling and glass. If you really want it though, do it while you can. I'm all for getting what you want and not settling for so-so, unless the cost is really outside your budget. We survived for 22 years with "only" 900 x 900 showers.... but I'm loving my bigger ensuite shower now. So the builder wouldn't be taking space from elsewhere in the en suite, or from an adjoining room? The overall size of the house would be slightly bigger? The smaller shower is fine, I think it's what we have here, but if I had the choice I would go for the bigger one. Even for that price. I just love my bigger shower. If only i could upgrade the water pressure. Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 8Sep 24, 2009 5:49 pm We had 1200 x 900 showers installed in our old house in Melbourne when we renovated there - we loved them!!! DH is 6 foot 4 so needs a bit more space. Couldn't quite fit them in our current reno, so we are having 1060 x 900 in the ensuite and 900 x 900 in kid's bathroom. If you can have them, I would, you will never want to go back!! Just my opinion though. Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 10Sep 24, 2009 8:32 pm I think that a good "party" shower (1200mm x 900mm minimum) is a must. Ours is 1800mm x 900mm and can fit my wife, me and our child easy with plenty of elbow room... Party showers are good for when you want to make kids, and good for when you have kids... I would think the cost depends somewhat on what is involved. Enlarging a shower within the existing space would be cheaper than enlarging it by realigning internal walls. And enlarging it by realigning internal walls would be cheaper than enlarging it by pushing out an external wall under the existing roofline. And enlarging it by pushing out an external wall under the existing roofline would be cheaper than enlarging it by pushing out an external wall and extending the roofline. The OP hasn't actually told us how the shower would be enlarged, apart from indicating that no compensatory reduction would take place within the existing space. I agree, we are the same, the larger shower definately comes in handy with small kids plus from a resale value I think it's better too. I would think most people whould prefer a larger shower space ____________________________ Bec ____________________________ Building our Balinese Resort Inspired Dream Home Blog ~ http://hagarshouse.blogspot.com/ Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 14Sep 27, 2009 8:12 am It's an ensuite, not a main bathroom, we were more than happy with the 900 x 900 in the ensuite at the last house, with the larger shower in the main bathroom. Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 15Sep 27, 2009 9:32 am I have the 900x1200 shower, this is the first time, all the others have been standard. Now I have used it I will never go back to the smaller one. Its great you dont feel closed in and it really makes an impact in the ensuite, every one says ooooh look at your lovely big shower. I would even like to go bigger, thinking of my next design, I would like 900x 1800 with 2 shower heads one at each end or maybe a dump shower head one end and normal the other, just to give you a choice as DH fancies the dump one but Im not to sure, dont know if I would like the water running down my face. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 16Sep 28, 2009 11:19 pm I could never go back to the 900x900 showers. We have one in this rental (ensuite) and l never use it as the bathroom one is 1000x1000 and so much more roomier. It's amazing the difference 100mm makes! Both showers in the new house are 1200x900, would've like to have gone deeper for both of them and wider in the ensuite, but space and $$ made it not doable. Still it didn't stop me having two shower heads in the ensuite though! Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 17Sep 29, 2009 2:45 pm I have always had larger showers than the standard 900mmx900mm and will be doing that in my build too for the other showers. I'd go for the bigger shower in the ensuite and I'm getting a double shower in mine. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: Ensuite Shower Size 1200mmX900mm/900mmX900mm Please advice 18Oct 03, 2009 5:40 pm I would definatley recommend going for the biggest one you can. I had a 900 x 900 (built 75mm or so off the floor) at my last house, and have a 1050 x 1020 9at floor level) in the ensuite at my current house. Its amazing the difference it make, its just so much less cramped.
