I also like Kylie's idea of seperating the bedroom from the rest of the home with a partition of some sort. To increase the space in the kitchen you could wrap the kitchen bench around the side wall which would illiminate the island bench (although I do like this idea) but potentially it would be giving you an area for a dining table.
I lived in a one bedroom apartment in sydney which was very similar to the space you have to work with. For the partitioning they used a plaster wall and plantations shutters so that you could open the hole apartment up which made the space look larger and allowed for heaps of natural light to just gush through, or close the plantation shutters of if you wanted privacy.
