Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 08, 2009 2:30 pm hi We're in the process of renovating our bathroom atm. The guy who previously did the house inspection for me said that it's good that our upstair shower has a base in it because with tiles, it eventually leaks. So I thought I stick to the shower base when we renovate the bathroom this time. The guy came to give us a quote told us that the shower base only lasts about 5 years. If you do waterproofing properly, it'll last about 10 years. Does anyone know much about this and confirm for me? I know the frameless shower screen look is in at the moment but look is not my concern, I just want something practical. We plan to do some of the renovation ourselves and my hb can do the waterproofing bit but I'm just thinking with DIY renovation, maybe it doesn't last as long as what the builder quotes it would be. Then I should stick to the shower base. Thanks for your help Re: Upstair shower-Tiled or use shower base???? 2Sep 08, 2009 5:39 pm So just wondering if you worked that out... or need further confirmation The tiler is correct, if the waterproofing is done to the AS standard ( there are plenty of threads on it ) you will have 10+ years. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Upstair shower-Tiled or use shower base???? 3Sep 08, 2009 7:58 pm I used Marbletrend solid shower bases in both showers - almost no risk of leakage and no floor tiles to clean Re: Upstair shower-Tiled or use shower base???? 4Sep 16, 2009 1:09 pm thanks guys for the responses. I have another question, the plumber told me not to use the tap mixer for the shower rail/head and the bath tub as it will be harder to fix if it's broken (like you actually have to take it out of the wall, etc). I really like one for the shower, is it really that bad to fix it if its' broken? Thanks Re: Upstair shower-Tiled or use shower base???? 5Sep 16, 2009 1:24 pm If you like it, use it. I have 3 showers and a bath in my current home, all with wall mixers. None have had any problems in 9 years. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Upstair shower-Tiled or use shower base???? 6Sep 17, 2009 11:39 pm You can get a shower base to fit flush with the floor, already graded to the drain & tile over it. This is what we've used in upstairs bathrooms. They are totally waterproof and give the continuous tiled floor look. (Marmox is one brand there are others). Waterproofing - well just be sure its done right with 2 coats (one across the room, 2nd one down the room) as well as total shower walls and 150 - 200mm up the walls. (Have heard of a certified pro doing a skimpy one coat just in the corners! and charging $1000 for it ) I have seen poly marble shower bases last in excess of 30 years 1 4517 No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further. When I manage some spare time, I might play around with the first DIY part of my… 7 4939 Thank you so much. We ended going with the terrain that’s part of our brick. 2 2545 |
