Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 3Sep 03, 2009 11:29 pm Hi, Two of our bathrooms are upstairs. Not sure how they could get around that one. Apparently they can put little ramps under your carpet so you dont notice as much, but still...... Im going to recommend to our builder that he doesnt offer them to clients in a similar situation to ourselves or at least lets them know how it will turn out well before the day the tilers get there to lay them. Thanks for your reply. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 4Sep 03, 2009 11:30 pm The slab should have been set down, but obviously it's too late for that. You could ask the builder to feather the edge under the carpet where it meets the tiles. That is, ramp up the carpet where it meets the tiles to avoid the toe stubbing step up you are talking about. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 5Sep 04, 2009 9:01 am We have these drains as well, but they weren't $50 think we got ripped off, anyway, our tiler had to screed the bathrooms to get the right fall so we have a 30mm step up from the bedroom to the ensuite. In the downstairs bathroom, also built up, the tiler tiled a little ramp from the one floor to the other, he did this anywhere he could. I think most tilers would want to screed a bathroom before tiling, so possibly there would be some sort of step up no matter what drain you choose. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 6Sep 04, 2009 9:27 am Our bathrooms - in both the new house, previously built house and the one we are currently renting which is only 12mths old - all have a small 30mm step-up into them. Don't all bathrooms have this? I always assumed it is to lay the floor draining into the central drainage point. Never had any stubbed toes here over the last 8yrs - our annoying lounge suite however that is a completely different matter. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 7Sep 04, 2009 9:43 am Same here, our last house had a step up into the ensuite and it didnt cause 1 issue over the 6 years we had the house. I wouldnt be too concerned with it. Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Things nearly done. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 8Sep 04, 2009 10:15 am Thanks all for the reponses. Have made me feel a little better. The step up from the floor to the bathroom is currently 60mm without the tile on top so will go up another 5mm or so. After carpet we are still going to have a step up that is 30mm +. It looks ridiculous at the moment. I really hope once carpet is laid that I am left to wonder what all the fuss was about. Not to mention the blast I gave the builder for not letting me know it was gong to be like this. Oh, and for the person who reckons the might have been ripped off. I have been told "about $50 each" havent seen the actual cost yet. I'm worried now. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 9Sep 04, 2009 10:22 am Brosman Thanks all for the reponses. Jack Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 10Sep 04, 2009 11:53 am kyton Don't all bathrooms have this? I always assumed it is to lay the floor draining into the central drainage point. Nope, not in Vic. But then we don't usually have drains in bathroom floors (except in the showers, of course ). That step-up thing always annoys me when we stay interstate. I like my floors all on the same level. And no stubbed toes. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 11Sep 04, 2009 12:06 pm I am always amazed at the diffences between the states / building. We have drains in all wet areas - so one in each bathroom as well as another in the laundry and one each in the powderrooms (And this isn't counting the normal ones in each shower!) So for our home 11 all up. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 12Sep 04, 2009 1:57 pm Mind you, they would have been handy in our old house. I lost count of the number of times I let the bath overflow when the kids were little and I was doing 17 things at once. And then there was the laundry sink, with no bypass, so the old sock-in-the-drain trick used to get me regularly. This is why we HAVE to have the drains in wet areas it makes sense doesn't it Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 15Sep 07, 2009 6:44 pm I was really surprised to see that there was no drains in the bathrooms or laundry of our new house - I just expected that they would be put in... My blog: http://artstitcheshome.blogspot.com Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 16Oct 13, 2009 9:33 am Hey there, out of interest, i am womdering where you are finding these tile insert grates at $50 or $60? we sell them along with other kinds of shower grates at showergrateshop and as far as i'm aware we are the cheapest around. i know the centre floor waste "smart tile" styles retail for about that much, but $50 would barely cover the cost of the stainless steel for a linear grate. sorry i hope its ok i dont mean to plug our product on the first post, but i'd like to know if that price really is accurate. cheers! MyHomeoneThread Our Oxford22 Blog Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 18Dec 03, 2009 10:50 pm Hi there Bedded bathroom floors with 30 to 50mm is quiet common in most states except for Victoria where floor wastes are not used, only in the shower. So dont be alarmed, this is normal practice. In relation to the tiled floor waste for $50, there are a few models around which have copied from the original waste, the smart tile which is made from ABS and stainless edge and tray. The other cheaper ones for around $50 - $30 are made from plastic with plastic coated silver edging to make it look like stainless. Be aware as over time the plastic coating comes off and exposes the plastic underneath like every other plastic chrome coated floor waste. There are some that are made from brass, these also tarnish long term If you want something to last and provide that look, go for the original Regards Shane Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 19Dec 04, 2009 6:55 pm You mean these? we just installed them in 3 showers, the laundry floor and the bathroom floors? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Tile in Shower grates - Beware !! 20Dec 04, 2009 8:59 pm oh shoot.. i think we also got this (but as standard inclusion)... have to check the plan drawing if there will be a step-up..
