Re: Shower Screen height 5Sep 02, 2009 10:40 pm Thanks for the replies. It must be the long 600m tiles giving an optical illusion of being short. I measured current home are they are 1900m so we'll go with that. Re: Shower Screen height 6Sep 02, 2009 10:45 pm BTW I don't see how a 10mm toughened glass panel could warp - I'd say its more to do with weight & stability - I'm no expert tho'. Re: Shower Screen height 7Sep 08, 2009 12:28 pm Just found this forum! I think I'm in heaven now! lol We are adding a new bathroom to the house and the builder is tiling up 1800. We are getting a frameless shower screen put in and I have been getting quotes for custom made ones however found a place in Brisbane which has some premade ones which are 1950mm high. Can we use this if the tiles are only 1800 or should be get the tiles done to 2000mm? Re: Shower Screen height 8Sep 10, 2009 11:58 am Be carefull when buying pre made frameless shower screens. The problem is they are made perfectly square - as in vertical to horizontal. Say your wall is out by 5mm over the 1800mm or so - what do you do then. I have heard many horror stories on this problem. Thats why a showerscreen supplier always measures up once tiling is complete. Thats why a tiler will follow the contour of the wall but ensure its level. Cheers Charlie Re: Shower Screen height 10Sep 23, 2009 7:00 pm I ended up with a bow in one of my frameless showerscreen panels. Apparently the size of the panel (especially width) can increase the risk of this happening. I wasn't told about this and the size of the panel was actually determined by the supplier. I have ended up with one panel which is visibly bowed but because the degree of warpage is within the allowable range for the safety standard the supplier would not do anything about it. Apparently the warpage occurs when the glass is going through the toughening process. So best to check this out with your supplier before going ahead. Re: Shower Screen height 11Oct 07, 2009 11:29 pm yes when toughening glass it can bow but this can be down each oven and more so the operater. Some glass co have no problem suppling flat tough glass From mem i think allowable bend is 1mm per 300mm ie 2100=7mm bow Re: Shower Screen height 12Oct 15, 2009 10:24 am supasquirrel What height should shower screens be. Particularly for frameless? We are not overly tall but have 9ft ceilings in the house. The tiler has tiled to 1900mm which is 3 full tiles plus a bit as the tiles are 600mm long. It looks a bit "low" somehow. Any thoughts from those in the know??? Normal shower screen hieght is 2000mm. You can find a whole range of frameless shower screens 2000mm height With 1900mm you may need a custom made shower screen Re: Shower Screen height 13Apr 13, 2011 3:31 pm Bumping this thread up..... Question. Our ceilings are 2.9m . Our shower screen is to 2.0m. We have tiling around the bathroom at 1.0m but we're thinking full height tiling for the shower recess. Weird or ok? Re: Shower Screen height 14Apr 13, 2011 3:51 pm Full height in the shower recess should look great. If it's an enclosed area then it would be fine - not sure though if it's not enclosed, if you know what I mean. Hopefully someone can share pictures if they have done the same! Re: Shower Screen height 15Apr 13, 2011 4:16 pm Thanks Mclaren. We have 3 bathrooms. The ensuite has tiling on 3 walls of the shower - we have gone full height here. The bathroom shower is in the corner next to the bath - we have gone full height here. But the 2nd ensuite shower is in the corner, next to the window. The tiler thinks that full height here will make it too top heavy and I think he might be right. At the moment the tiling is sitting at 2.0m which is the height of the shower screen and the height of the top of the window. It looks good. I think he's right that it may be too top heavy if it goes full height here.... (if you can imagine). I need to take some pics! I just don't like the idea of 2 showers being full height and the 3rd being the odd one out.... Re: Shower Screen height 16Apr 13, 2011 4:36 pm But if it looks better being lower then so be it! Re: Shower Screen height 17Apr 13, 2011 4:42 pm It proably does look better lower, due to the position of the shower in the room. It wouldn't look horrid if it was tiled to the ceiling, but probably does look more balanced in the room. Thanks! Re: Shower Screen height 18Apr 14, 2011 2:05 am Hi all, new to this forum but have been in the shower screen business for many years and am happy to help with advice. The point made regarding pre-fab / flat pack screens is 100% correct , they are made square and generally don't fit properly (frameless especially due to inferior hardware). I would steer clear of them for several reasons: even if they do fit as in the case of framed or semi-framed etc there is only adjustment in the wall channels and not on the floor where your tiles have fall so that the water drains. Secondly, as they are imported you have no chance of obtaining parts should they need maintenance in the future.
On the topic of height, I would not recommend more than 2000mm for any framed, semi-framed or perimeter designs because of the thickness of the glass more than anything, width of each panel also has a bearing on this so it varies from one screen to another. The reason is that panels can become bowed and/or have flex in them which apart from feeling flimsy (especially when cleaning), can cause doors to fall out due to the amount of flex in relation to the depth of the pivot system. There are ways around this but it adds to the cost of the screen as does the extra surface of the glass etc. In short, not recommended unless absolutely necessary. The maximum height for a frameless shower screen is only determined by the weight of the glass: ie, the load that each hinge is rated for. This can be overcome by adding extra hinges but this is unpopular due to the non symmetrical look of having 3 hinges. Also access is an issue when panels become too big. Not trying to sell anyone anything, but have seen too many people throw money away on pre made rubbish, do yourself a favour and get your screen made to measure locally out of Australian made toughened glass. P.S. There is no such thing as a standard shower screen, every bathroom is different and wall and floor levels vary. Heights vary in each bathroom as we all have different needs and by factors such as shower head placement etc. Hope this helps Re: Shower Screen height 19Apr 15, 2011 10:47 pm Our shower screens (22 years old) are laminated glass, and have moisture / mould in them up to say 25mm penetration. Is this still the case, is toughened glass an option ? Thanks, P_D . Most companies only offer toughened these days, the only exception is the ones that offer a 2-3 day turn-around because toughened glass takes longer to manufacture to size whereas laminate can be cut and framed the same day if needed. I wouldn't recommend laminate unless it's real emergency and you are selling the property and won't be around long enough to see it de-laminate. Hope this helps. Your shower screen has failed in the way it is designed to fail with tempered glass. You could replace it with laminated safety glass but make sure it has AS standards logo on it 1 11164 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
