Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 16, 2009 6:35 pm What do you think of the floor tiles going up the side of the bath & on top. I know you can use floor tiles on walls but they are verry heavy do you think it makes a difference? Do you think having the same tile on the floor & side of bath and on top of it is too much of the same thing? I was thinking it may make the area look bigger? What ya think? Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 2Aug 16, 2009 6:48 pm Funny you should ask KW - we had our appointment with our interior designer on Friday to select tiles and we are doing exactly that - floor tile is going up the side of the bath! I think it looks good. JL Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 3Aug 16, 2009 7:03 pm Hi KW, I love this look, and don't think it looks too heavy at all. I love the contrast. Here is a pic of our bathroom with the floor tiles going up the side of the bath and on the bath hob. In the ensuite we have the floor tiles all over the bath and all the walls too! But they are not a dark colour. Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 4Aug 16, 2009 10:41 pm Hi KW, We are having 300 x300mm matt porcelain tiles on the floor with the same tile on the bath hob - the only difference is that the bath hob tiles are polished. We have 300 x 600mm rectified white tiles to the shower and walls. Another option was to have the wall that you first saw when entering the bathroom tiled in the same floor tiles. This tiled wall was also part of the wall in the shower (with shower rose etc) and the end of the bath. We did not go with this option as the tiles we chose would have made this an expensive exercise. This option I feel would have made our bathroom look bigger as there is only a bath and shower. We have a separate powder room for the vanity etc. PCI Done Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 5Aug 16, 2009 11:00 pm we are having our floor tiles go up and over the bath hob. The floor tiles are 300 x300, the tiles going up and over the bath hob are 300x600 but they are the same colour from the same range. Most of the more expensive display homes I went to had this. However I don't seem to have any photos of it.... Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 7Aug 16, 2009 11:25 pm HI all Its a bit hard to make a call on this one. Ive given it enought of my time and will go with the same on the floor , up the bath and on top, but not on the shower wall or the wall near the bath. I think thats to much of the same. The thing with tiles is they dont look the same when you lay them. They seem to be a different colour at a different angle. All I want is for my bathroom to be the coolest. I guess If Im not happy I can take them off after hand over, that will be fun ha ha ha. I agree the more expencive displays seem too have a bit more time put into them and look heaps better. Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 8Aug 16, 2009 11:29 pm Caroline Do you have a spair room. I think I want to live at your place. The kitchen, now this, come on, you make my efforts look like a waist of time. ha ha ha. The bathroom is bloody magnificent. Now tell me, who planned it out and chose all the colours. I think I need you help. Nice work Caroline. Regards KW.............. “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 9Aug 16, 2009 11:43 pm KW I found the tile shop I liked best, chatted with three sales consultants, and asked them what they thought would be nice. I used this exercise to pick who my sales consultant would be. Then I asked her to pretend it was her bathroom, and show me what she'd do. Her taste was similar to mine, but of course her execution was way, way superior! I am all about getting expert advice which is in line with my taste. In other words, it's not my work but I will happily take the credit and compliments, thanks !! Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 10Aug 17, 2009 12:04 am Carolin I have found that when i go into a tile shop the consultant seems to go with the simple stuff. Like cream or white 200 x 300mm. I mean come on, even I can pick them out. Ive not had a lot of luck with the tiles yet but will stick with it I guess. Yours looks like a 5 star hotel bathroom. Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 11Aug 17, 2009 12:49 am King willy I know you can use floor tiles on walls but they are verry heavy do you think it makes a difference? When we were looking at tiles we were told that the weight makes a difference to installation but we ended up getting smaller tiles so I don't really know the details. Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 12Aug 17, 2009 1:50 am Good point Macy. KW............ “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 13Aug 17, 2009 7:09 am We will be placing our brown floor tiles on the baths and skirting Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 14Aug 17, 2009 10:39 am We often use the same floor tile colour up the side of the bath and continue it up the wall behind the bath if we wish to introduce a feature wall - but we always change the size. For example we will use a 30x30 floor which has a different size in its range as the tile on the wall. I guess it comes to design, but Im not into seeing a full square tile on the face of the bath with a small rectangular cut on the top or bottom of this full tile- its not good symetry. See if the floor tile comes in a 30x60, lay it horizontally at least its a rectangular cut on the face. And if you carry this up on the wall behind the bath, then lay the 3 remaing wall vertical. So your feature is not only a change in colour but also orientation - it draws the eye to the tiles. Even better if it comes in a scored tile or feature tile where you can have equal amounts of full tiles under the edge of the bath - hope that bit makes sense. Im doing two designs at the moment and will try to psot a cad drawing of what Im talking about. Cheers Charlie PS dont worry about the weight, its not going to make a difference. If they say it will - ask them what if I wanted travertine or marble on the wall? Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 15Aug 17, 2009 10:07 pm Ahhh, good advice Zedman. I am using 300 x 600 so would love to see the picture of what you are doing. JL Re: Fllor tiles on the bath ? 16Aug 18, 2009 9:42 am Ok here is a drawing of a project we are working on. I can only get the tile in a 300x600 (same tile as 300x300 floor we are using), so what we are doing is having each tile scored(grooved) in the middle. So when each tile is laid and grouted it will look like a 150mmx600mm tile. I have done this to have three 150mm increments under the bath lip but also to have more full tiles shown on the back wall. Due to the window position with the 300x600 full tile I would only see one full row with the rest all cuts. The reaming three walls in this bathroom are 300x600 laid vertically that are laid after the feature wall so the heights line up. Hope the scan is clear enough. http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv124/kalafrana/scan0001.jpg Charlie Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
