Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 14, 2009 11:56 am Ok, so Ive got this ugly bathroom at the moment (so ugly that I can't yet bring myself to expose it to the forum!) Its small and the tiles are HORRIBLE!! Theyre like a green/brown marbley/vomitty colour Basicly, its hideous, I am aware that its hideous, but seeing as Im building I dont want to waste my money doing reno's on it. Im thinking It just needs a fresh coat of paint. Its currently painted a pale green colour - which I hate. Im was thinking like a beigey/brown colour, but now Im thinking it might not look too appealing, as it will be going in the toilet as well. Looking at a brown wall while your on the toilet...maybe not. Any suggestions? I'll try to post a picture of my glorious tiles Building 'The Kingston' (with 'Boston' elevation) through Blueprint Homes in Hocking, Perth **PCI complete 06.02.10** My Thread - https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=17607 Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 2Aug 14, 2009 12:19 pm These are the gorgeous floor tiles... The rest of the house is really nice too, Ive painted it all pretty and its got really nice furniture... so now Im stuck with a pretty house with an ugly toilet/bathroom! Its driving me crazy! But I dont want to spend too much, as Im only going to rent it out once the new house is built. I think I would just paint a fresh light colour - a white to lift the room - and yep bin the curtains. As you said it really isn't worth spending a lot of money if you are going to build as well. Really it is quite stylish compared to my first homes imagine flat dark gray walls and those teeny tiny hexagonal tiles about 1cm wide in lovely shades of gray, blue and lemon. And yep my toilet was pretty much identical to your alien one Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 7Aug 14, 2009 3:11 pm MIght just be me but I don't find it hideous at all. Gosh you obviously haven't truly seen a hideous bathroom in your time if you are ashamed of that lol Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 8Aug 14, 2009 5:18 pm thanks, I thought it was terrible, but there's obviously worse ones out there! ...except for maybe that toilet! The only toilets I've seen that are worse than that are the ones overseas - those 'hole in the ground' type ones I never really noticed how ugly and outdated the tiles were until I started building the new house. Now I just cant stand looking at them! So Im thinking of painting all the walls tomorrow. Just not too sure what colour. I guess I just want something that makes it feel a little less...green! Something that goes with the tiles, but draws the attention away from the dirty green colour. If you require advice or my services please call me on (Oops a PM would be better). Happy to help! Edited by onc_artisan Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 11Aug 15, 2009 12:17 am I think the white paint would do the trick, maybe replace the curtain with a cheap white venetian blind or roman blind from Ikea, replace the wooden towel rail with a chrome or brushed stainless one (you can get them cheap from Bunnings) and put up a cheap frameless mirror in place of the wooden one. I really don't mind the tiles at all! We moved into a rental place once and they'd painted the tiles white (which tile paint I presume). It didn't look too bad. I had a pretty rotten bathroom in my apartment, 15 years old with a plastic vanity and white tiles with green bits in. There was only one thing for it, paint the walls off-white with a big green feature wall. I then painted a canvas in the white wall cover with green and dark red squares and stripes and put it on the feature wall to contrast. Sounds horrible but actually didn't look that bad (in my opinion). I also changed the handles on the vanity (from yellowing plastic knobs to nice brushed stainless handles (ebay)) and put in some brushed stainless towel rails and toilet roll holders, and some new shiny taps. Probably my only good piece of advice. . . . remember to keep all your receipts for money spent on the house, you may be able to claim it back as depreciation for you tax return (even if you do the work before you rent the place out. . . talk to your accountant!) Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 12Aug 15, 2009 10:18 am Ok yes I agree those tiles are ugly. Hideous! You are very lucky to have the tiles in great condition so at least you have some options. What is your budget? If I was doing this reno on a budget, I would definitely... 1. Remove the curtain - get a fresh white roller blind from Bunnings/Ikea/wherever 2. Paint or re-enamel the tiles. If you do it properly then you can do it yourself. White for the walls, mocha or a mid grey for the floor 3. Paint the walls and ceiling in both bathroom and toilet.. white 4. Either remove that wood thing along the wall holding the towel rails or paint it white gloss 5. Replace the towel rails and toilet roll holder with a modern chrome set (from Bunnings or eBay) 6. Looks like there is a bath there - if it is in poor condition or a vile colour then either replace it or get it re-enamelled 7. Get rid of that horrid vanity and get a new one - buy it off eBay or a discount shop. Even Bunnings has some nice and inexpensive vanities 8. Replace the tapware with some inexpensive chrome ones, don't change the plumbing just change the taps and spouts (this also goes for the bath/shower area) 9. Mount a new frameless mirror (bigger than the one you have in there) on the wall 10. I can't see if the bath has a shower screen or a shower curtain. If it has a screen and it's reasonably tasteful then just give it an awesome clean, otherwise get a cheap clear semi frameless one off eBay and install it yourself. If it has a shower curtain then buy a simple white one from Bunnings. 11. The toilet - it needs to go. Well not go.. be replaced. Again go to eBay for a bargain. You will need a plumber to install it for you. 12. Buy a hidden bracket shelf from Bunnings and replace the one that's there in the toilet area. If you are clever about your purchases then I think you could do all of the above for under $2000 including labour costs for plumber. If you have a tighter budget than that then just cut out the bits you can't afford. Remember this is an investment, if you make it look good now then it will pay you dividends and increase your resale value down the track. Good Luck 2fk Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 13Aug 15, 2009 11:26 am I tend to agree with the posters who said it isnt too bad - I think it looks ok, especially if you take out the curtain (its a frosted window, I would just leave it bare, let new owners put something there if they want) and maybe the wooden towel rail; curtains and rail just making it look too cluttery and therefore smaller. Also in the picture you have blue towels - this is making the colour clash look worse - just have no towels there when house is shown to buyers, easy Vanity and toilet aren't the latest and greatest but I wouldnt be replacing them. Not sure if you intend renting this place out or selling it when you move - but either way its not a problem - hardly likely to be issues for buyer - they will probably plan to renovate bathroom down the track anyway so no point in partly doing it and the toilet is ok,I have seen many older houses with those sort of toilets, hardly likely to make or break a sale, or stop tenants renting the place. Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 14Aug 15, 2009 6:56 pm Helyn, I agree. . . and TwoFatKitties. . . some of your points are good, but I wouldn't be going to such extremes, especially if the place is gong to be sold or rented. A toilet's a toilet. . . some things are about function, not form. Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 16Aug 15, 2009 10:36 pm jodge I guess it is all relative. NatB said that the rest of her house is really pretty, and she is wanting to rent it out when her new build is finished. I interpret that as wanting maximum ROI without spending a lot of cash. She could do a 5 minute reno and paint the walls, and it may look a little fresher but at the end of the day those tiles are still there and she still has to look at them! NatB you could do nothing at all and still get a tenant.. so this is not really about necessity, as I assume it is a perfectly functioning bathroom and loo, it's more about aesthetics. If you know your budget that would help determine what are the "must dos" to get the bathroom and toilet looking schmick. And whilst the toilet is functional (so is a hole in the ground!), I would definitely put the toilet replacement pretty high up on the priority list. You can get very presentable loos for less than $200 if you shop smart. 2fk Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 17Aug 16, 2009 2:14 pm All it needs is a repaint, some nice new towels and a few accessories (those you can take with you, so no money lost there). We did a super-cheap reno on our ensuite prior to selling our old place. We kept the vanity, toilet and shower base, but we chose to retile in plain white (believe me, your tiles have nothing on ours! ORANGE flowers, and cracked glaze that wouldn't come clean, no matter what. ). Then we repainted in pale beige; had to get rid of the nightmare apricot. The 80s brown floor tiles stayed. We had to replace the shower screen, as it was cracked, so we went for a new clear glass semi-frameless one. That was our biggest expense. We ditched the old blinds and left the frosted window bare, and then I made it look beautiful with chocolate and olive green towels and some green glassware, all of which came with us to our new place. Oh, and we added a new mirror ....the old one had a brown plastic frame. Niiiiice.... All-up we spent $1000, but if your shower screen and tiles are in good nick, a can of paint and some accessories will make a huge difference. It's really not as bad as you think. Perhaps this will make you feel better...... As for wall colour, I'd stick to neutrals: pale beige, white or cream. Stronger colours can be off-putting to prospective buyers who may not share your taste. Re: Help me fix my ugly bathroom!! 18Aug 17, 2009 11:38 am Hmm some good points here... I didnt end up doing a lot to it over the weekend, just pulled down the curtain. I want to spend as little as possible, so Im thinking just a coat of paint on the wall and maybe the tiles. The bath/shower are in really good condition still so I wont need to worry about those. Might get some new handles for the vanity too. Something a bit more modern! Dont know if I'll worry about replacing the taps etc just yet. Maybe if Im having trouble finding a tenant I'll do a bit more to it. Do tile paints really work properly, or are they more of a temporary solution? I just have this vision of it peeling and cracking a few months down the track? Macy - Its a fairly old house. I live in a little mining town in the desert so theyre all old Western Mining houses that got sold off. The guy who had the house before us was a bit of a ******* DIY guy, so theres a heap of ** workmanship around the place! ...you should of seen the 'extension' he did to the front of the house!! ...luckily we pulled it down before it fell down! Apparently wet areas are a common location. Our local government website says "Even something as minor as putting up a new towel rail in the bathroom can release asbestos fibres into the air if it involves drilling into asbestos cement sheet" and they have Factsheets for various tasks that you can download.
