Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 13, 2009 9:16 pm Hi all. OK, this is probably a really dumb question, but anyway..... We are in the middle of renovating our ensuite. I would like a heated towel rail (we are in Hobart, very frosty mornings!), DH is not keen. Neither of us has ever used one before. We have only a small ensuite, with only one small space for towel rails. So if we get one of the ladder sort, that will be the only towel rail we have in there. DH doesn't like the idea of damp towels overlapping each other. In our old house in Melbourne, we had a double towel rail on the wall, so we each had a rung for our towel and they hung down without touching each other, IYKWIM. Soooo, people with heated towel rails, do your towels dry properly if they hang overlapping each other on the ladder thing. Is that how people usually hang their towels on them? Surely noone would have a heated towel ladder EACH in a bathroom, so they must be intended for multiple towel hanging, right??? Told you it was a dumb question - all the pictures I have found show towel rails with no towels, or only one towel - not helpful !!! Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 2Aug 13, 2009 9:18 pm From what I have heard they don't really DRY the towels very well at all. They are very low temp. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 3Aug 13, 2009 9:40 pm Oh dear, that doesn't sound positive, themax . So you wouldn't recommend getting one then? I'm so sick of damp chilly towels . Thought maybe it was the answer. Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 4Aug 13, 2009 10:07 pm Firstly, I know nothing about heated towel rails BUT with a ladder type one, can't one of you hang your towel to the front and the other to the back of the rungs? Does that make sense? 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' LATROBE 320 WITH DENNIS FAMILY HOMES Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 6Aug 14, 2009 7:40 am I havnt got one DH thought they would cost to much to keep on or you would have to have one with a timer which was expensive. I have put a ducted heating duct in my bathrooms and luckily they are s above the towel rail and drys them nicely, in the summer I find they dry quickly on a normal double rail anyway if opened out, I put 2 towels on there and then throw the towel bath mat over the top of the shower. when dry I fold everything nicely on the rails like they do in display houses I did use a heated rail once on holidays and it was lovely, it wasnt very hot just warmed the towels but that was on constantly as there was a notice on the wall saying not to turn it off. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 7Aug 14, 2009 7:44 am Was having this discussion with DH the other day. We are having them in all 4 ensuites (picked them up really cheap on Grays if anyone is still looking, they come up periodically) but have never used them before. Do you turn them on for instance before you go and start doing things - ie if you shower in the morning would you turn them on first then go and organise the kid's breakfasts before you come back to shower? Just wondering how long they take to warm up? Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 8Aug 14, 2009 9:20 am No, I have NEVER had one, but that is what someone told me. Perhaps by the responses here they obviously DO work. Perhaps the one my friend had was a bad brand maybe. Maybe I should get them too? I HATE the damp towels in the bathroom. I am learning too!! www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 9Aug 14, 2009 9:52 am Hi Guys We have them (hydronic heated though) and it is just that little touch of luxury that makes having a shower on a cold morning worth while. It should heat up your bathroom and I find my towels are dried in about 20 mins completely. We also dry clothing on the hydronic panels as they come on at 5.30 in the morning. I think a heated towel rack is wonderful but I dont know what brands work better. ....our towels are just spread out, overlap a little but everything dries so quickly. After that I fold them very nicely like in a hotel suite as well Mrs B Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 11Aug 14, 2009 12:32 pm My wife and I are nearly finished with our planning and have found these lovely ones: http://www.selector.com/company/DC_Shor ... owel_rails The DCShort website is under maintenace at the moment so I cant link to them. They cost around $175 each rail and the transformer is around $60. Three rails should do it. Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 13Aug 14, 2009 1:10 pm SuH - can't believe you didn't get them. Check out Graysonline - they often sell Smeg / Omega ones plus I did see some nice looking stainless ones at Bunnings about a month ago. Some things are worth waiting for. Well I didn't think I would need them, our ladder towel racks cost enough as it was, $400 each approx, summer will be here soon Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 15Aug 14, 2009 1:16 pm Thanks for your replies, everyone. Mrs B I think a heated towel rack is wonderful but I dont know what brands work better. ....our towels are just spread out, overlap a little but everything dries so quickly. After that I fold them very nicely like in a hotel suite as well Mrs B Mrs B, do you have a ladder type heated towel rail? You wouldn't happen to have a photo, would you, preferably with your towels drying on it (I know that is a lot to ask )? That would be wonderful, as I could show DH one in action (ie how you hang multiple towels on one rack and they still dry!), so to speak, to prove they are worth that little bit of extra expense! And I thought renovating would be easier the second time around!!! Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 16Aug 14, 2009 1:16 pm Yep ours was an agreement between DH and myself. He wanted underfloor heating - I couldn't see the point. So we mutually agreed on (the cheaper) towel rail option. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 17Aug 14, 2009 4:57 pm I would love to get one but I think it's too late. I take it you need a power point nearby and we have already sone our electrical plan. No doubt the builder will charge a great deal to put a power point in near our towel rack. Also is it dangerous if you forget to switch it off and left it on all day while at work? Or do you have to attach a timer to it? Hi magicJ I will take a pic tonight and show you how we dry the towels just have to quickly find the nice green towels I use for 'public viewing' Mrs B Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 19Aug 14, 2009 5:25 pm Oh, THANKYOU, Mrs B, you are lovely! I'm sure your towels are just gorgeous, like the rest of your house (I have visited your blog ). DH is still saying it is too expensive, for right now at least . Whoever invented money, it is such a nuisance!!!! I have not given up though !! We have had the power point put in though, so we can still do it down the track if all else fails - after all, it's nearly summer now, as SuH pointed out. Maybe by next winter............. Re: Heated Towel Rails - how do you use them? 20Aug 16, 2009 12:38 pm Ours are Omega/Smeg from Grays Online....we have a long one (11 rails) in our ensuite and it's perfect for the two of us. I bought a smaller one for the kids' bathroom but now wish I'd got two and hung them side-by side. One 7-rail job isn't really adequate for three kids. I may still do that, but there'll have to be some filling and repainting. They do work well, but like most heating appliances, they're expensive to run - Mrs B's hydronic setup is a bit different, and I'm not sure what the cost is like for those systems. My solution is a simple one - a basic plug-in timer that switches on at 6:00am and off at 8:00am. The towels dry, no problems, and they're nice and warm when you want to use them. This is the one we have in the ensuite and the towels barely overlap at all: Electrical just got back to me and said the most they can provide is a single power point on the Bedroom 1 side of that wall.
