Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 08, 2009 2:42 pm Hi guys, We have just boguht an apartment (yay). Really love it but the kicthen and bathroom are pretty old. Our first thing to do when we eventually get some more funds will be a new bathroom. Since neither of us are too handy in that area I'll be looking to get a new bathroom both supplied and fitted. Does anyone have any experiences with this, any reccommendations, any price approximations? We are from London and NZ and have been here juyst under 3 years so its a bit harder for us not having grown up knowing which places are best to use, if it was UK I'd pretty much know where to go. Thanks guys, Jen Re: Cost of a new bathroom 2Jul 09, 2009 9:40 am Hi Jen, In what part of Australia do you live? If you are in Sydney then expect to pay between $20k - $25k for a complete bathroom renovation. Bliss Bathrooms.... Re: Cost of a new bathroom 3Jul 09, 2009 11:14 am Obviously the cost of this project will depend on the size of your bathroom, whether your having bath? Shower (dual or standard), vanity (double or normal), tiling the whole thing or standard tiling?? I found this website (if i am allowed to post it), that has an estimator for you....But I tend to agree with the poster above that an average bathroom will cost around 20k. http://www.homedesigndirectory.com.au/c ... ator.shtml DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: Cost of a new bathroom 4Jul 10, 2009 10:56 am Great thanks guys that is what i thought altho of course was hoping you would say less. ha ha thanks Bliss bathrooms I'll check out both and the estimator. Mmm come on markets do a little better give a bonus worthy of a new bathroom not just the sink! We have a dual bath and shower so that should make it slightly cheaper I guess. I dont know if it is even tiled I'd hope so need to check when I get in there (we will probably move in in 5 weeks). So hard to know whether you're getting good workmanship though I was hoping for some reviews of people who have done this before and really happy with the long term work. Re: Cost of a new bathroom 5Jul 10, 2009 11:09 am Don't dismiss smaller contractors. We had a new bathroom installed here in Newcastle 18mths ago by a local carpenter who used his own plumber / tiler / waterproofer. They ripped our bathroom back to bearers and joists in the floor/ framing in the walls. Completely relined walls and floors, waterproofed everything, tiles to 2m high and installed our PC items. Their labour quote was $8k and our PC items cost us less then $2k. The bathroom was around 3m x 2m and had a corner 900x900 shower, toilet, 850mm vanity with mirrored overhead cabinet as well as a 1900mm bath. They were brilliant workers too. We had them quote on the Saturday, they ripped out on the Sunday and started that Monday. The carpenter worked almost 7 days a week - some nights to 8.30pm when I would kick him out. Took them around 3wks all up. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Cost of a new bathroom 6Jul 10, 2009 11:41 am Bliss Bathrooms Hi Jen, In what part of Australia do you live? It has a bathtub and the shower is in the bathtub not enough room for separate. Bathtub is first then the sink next to it on the same wall and then the toilet. Laundry cupboard at the end. Would that it make it cheaper that the shower is in the bathtub? Alos, do the quotes usually include new floor? I dont even know what floor is down at the mo I cant remember (we have just bought). I def wouldnt dismiss any smaller contractors but just so worried about cowboys I dont knwo how you could tell them apart from the gooduns. How is it holding up 18 months later? Take it that included everything in your bathroom, floor walls tiles etc. What material was your floor? Shame your NC guys arent in Syd! Btw what is pc? Re: Cost of a new bathroom 8Jul 10, 2009 1:01 pm Hi Jen, There are many cowboys out there... you can check their licences on the office of fair trading website...you can find out if there has been any work complaints. As in a bathroom for 10k in Sydney... impossible!! It seems that those guys didn't have any work because they literally started the next day! Remember that to renovate a new bathroom, the contractor must be licenced accordantly.. Either a bathroom renovator or builder...not a carpenter. Any work over 12k must have a home owners warranty insurance certificate. At the end of the day there is a system in place to stop the cowboys...it's only up to the potential clients to stop them and do the right thing... Check out the Consumer building guide on www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au I also have a website if you’re looking for a quote... Bliss Re: Cost of a new bathroom 9Jul 10, 2009 1:35 pm Bathroom is still perfect. The house returned to being a rental 12mths ago - and the tenant didn't take especially good care but it looks as good as the day it was installed. I got the phone number from a guy I knew. He had just done some work for the carpenter and when he came to my house I just happened to ask him did he know anyone. Thankfully he still had the carpenter's card in his wallet so handed it over. Best referral I have ever had. The $2k covered the cost of the tiles for walls / floors / feature strip, toilet, vanity, tapware, mirrored cabinet and bath. Since it was a rental we didn't want to spend a massive amount so just went for good solid basics that we could get from local suppliers who were willing to negotiate on prices. The tiles were fairly plain - white for the bath hob and walls, a mocha colour for the floor and the feature tile was a glass rectangular in all shades of brown about 4cm high by 2cm wide. I only needed two sheets of this tile as the tiler sliced it into strips to fit around the perimeter of the room. In Sydney you would have such a wide number of resources to source your PC items from - and would be able to bargain on the prices. Try your local HIA Building Centre or Master Builders website for members - that was what we did when we were looking for a builder for our new home. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Cost of a new bathroom 10Jul 10, 2009 3:05 pm I agree......HIA are great!! I've been a member for years..
