Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 06, 2009 12:41 pm This is gonna sound idiotic I think, but what is a good base shade for the following combination of colours, bearing in mind the room is an ensuite that is pretty tiny (a large shower along one short wall, a vanity along another wall, a toilet on the wall opposite the shower, and the door on the remaining wall. Enough standing floor space, with both shower door and main door closed, to stand with legs shoulder width apart, but not enough for a standard sized bath matt) 1. The tiles are pinkish apricot 2. The vanity top is even paler pink 3. The floor tiles are very pale pink (same as vanity top) 4. Shower tiles are pinkish apricot with one horizontal row of feature tiles (sort of brownish) 5. Basin, toilet, etc are all white 6. Fixtures such as toilet roll holder and towel rail are matt chrome 7. Shower screen is tinted clear glass 8. Towels are a slightly pale brown / fawn colour 9. There are 2 large framed pictures on the toilet wall – one is mainly aqua in colour and the other is mainly purple. Both are in dark brown frames with ornate gold features, and with bright white matting around the outside of the pictures inside the frames. The tiles are only in the shower, on the floor, and up to about waist height on the walls. The rest is currently painted an incredibly pale pink, which almost looks like a pastel cool white. I don’t really like this colour much, and also the ceiling above the shower is peeling and there are marks that have been patched where I got the towel rail and stuff installed a while ago, so it does need repainting anyway. I don’t particularly like the tile or vanity top colours either (too pinky for my liking. I’d much prefer a more stone or slightly peachy/pale brown type neutral shade), but can’t afford to get them all done. I’m only considering neutral and fairly pale shades of paint, as the room is so small, anything more dark or flashy/impressive (like black or something!) would be just way too dark and draw the room in even more. I’m leaning towards the same shade as the rest of the apartment (Portland Stone, half strength) but then…half of me doesn’t want the same shade, even though I know it’d definitely suit the other colours. I also don’t want any of the totally white variations…I want more of a warm atmosphere in there, whilst still allowing the 2 framed pictures to sort of jump out to the eye and give depth. Thank you! Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 2Jul 06, 2009 3:30 pm How funny, I was reading your post and thinking about all these colours that you've mentioned and how you can connect them all together ... and throughout the whole thing I'm thinking "stone" for a colour. Then I read your last paragraph which says you have used Portland Stone at half strength in other parts of the house. If you want neutral then stick with what you like.. in the Porters Paints range http://www.porterspaints.com.au/default.aspx I quite like Flax and Himalaya as a complement to peachish/pink tones. Why not be a bit daring and paint one of the walls a different colour? Maybe pick a colour that is already in the tiles or something like Porters Wet Cement (may be a bit dark though)... if you hate it then just paint over it! Would love to see some photos though Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 3Jul 07, 2009 11:10 am Thanks for that! I had actually considered painting one of the walls a different colour, but I’m just not sure which one. The wall with the door on it is useless as it’s really only a small amount of wall to paint. The shower wall is tiled. The only real options are the back wall which is also mainly vanity mirror with 2 thin strips of wall down each side, and the toilet wall, which has the 2 hanging pictures on it. This is the wall that’d make the most sense to paint, but then you see, if I painted it a darker colour than the other walls, because it’s the largest wall in the room, I’d then again worry about making the room look smaller as a whole, you know? I do still like the idea though. I will definitely take some photos…before and after. The before ones I’ll post very soon, but the after…who knows!!! Lol. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 6Jul 22, 2009 11:04 pm Carpet? And a Christmas Tree? That's just insane! Now that I see your pictures, I think you can either go the safe option.. which is the colour in photo #1. It won't offend anyone and will match with your current scheme. From looking at your pics I tend to think that the first one will probably blend best with both the pinkish and peachish colours than the other pics. Or.. if you want to be DARING.. (and I think you should, after all it is just paint!) then what about a mocha type colour.. I noticed that you have a rolled up towel in the mirror reflection in the photo with the pictures on the wall. By the way I really like the pictures, they have great character and they are a really nice feature. A mocha will make them stand out, and still compliment the peach and pink. Why not grab some small sample pots from Bunnings and do a few paint stripes on the wall to see which one you like best? Will be interested to see what you choose.. keep us posted! 2fk PS. Cute kitties! I’ve been to Bunnings but so far only have 50 billion paint sample cards. Lol. I have narrowed it down to about 8, but they’re much the same shades really. Just in different combinations. I’ve left them on the vanity and every time I go in there, I look at them and study the room. I am over-thinking this, I know, but I don’t want to be unhappy with whatever choice I make! I definitely don’t want to…”encourage” the pink even more in the room, but at the same time, I don’t want to clash with it. When you’re away from the room and gathering paint sample cards, it’s funny how off the mark you can get. I stuck with neutrals, creams, beiges, vaguely peaches, mochas, darker fawn / brown shades, stone and other such colours, and then when I got home, was quite amused by how yellow some were and how much that clashed. I also keep looking at paint colours on the exteriors of houses around where I live, and have found what I think I want, but…of course, it’s external paint, it’s a huge house bathed in constant natural light, whereas my ensuite has no natural light at all and is tiny. So I think anything I love on a house, I may have to lighten it up a bit for my ensuite. Anyway, I have decided to use 2 colours, that’s for sure (plus a soft neutral white for the ceiling), but I’m not sure which walls to use which colours. I’m leaning towards something like Elegant Rose (I think it’s Taubmans but I’m not sure. It’s not that pinky. Less than I thought it’d be) or Coffee Time (which I think is Dulux, but it could be Taubmans actually, though this one is bordering on a BIT yellow based) combined with a darker mocha type shade as the feature or depth-giving wall. I think one of the browns I like is called Puddle and/or Faded Leather, and is Dulux (I think!) Lol. But I’m not sure which wall to use which on. I keep leaning towards using the lighter colour on the main wall (with the 2 pictures on it), and the darker colour on the thin mirror wall and the door wall. Just because I figure, if I use the darker colour on the smaller separate walls in the room, it won’t take over too much and draw the walls in to the eye, in what is already a little room. And also, the darker shade will look good when next to the relatively large expanse of cream door on one wall, and next to the white frame of the mirror on the other wall. The lighter colour would be on the one larger wall to make it hopefully not seem to close or small, and would stand out slightly more against the darker picture frames on that wall. That all makes sense to me, but then, whenever I hold the sample cards up to the walls, the darker mocha type colour looks better against the frames than the lighter colour does. So maybe, just MAYBE, the darker colour should go on that larger wall and the lighter colour should go on the other 2 walls…hmm… Should I take more pictures so you can help me (more than you already have)? lol. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 10Aug 04, 2009 6:41 pm You know I just hate those paint cards, it is just too confusing. Take your towels into Bunnings along with anything else you like the colour of (don't be embarrassed.. lots of strange things happen in Bunnings, no one will blink an eye at this) and find a colour that matches. Then take the matching colour card(s) home with you and THROW AWAY all of the other ones so you don't get distracted. Don't take more than 5 cards at one time. Start eliminating them one by one until you are left with one or two. Next step : Bite the bullet and make a decision. Remember, it is just paint, it is not a huge space.. if you hate it then you just buy some more paint and paint over it. You have to live with it and when you find that "just right" paint colour then you'll just *know*. More pics more pics more pics! 2fk Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 11Aug 05, 2009 4:28 pm Yeah, those paper card samples are SOOO...there's just so many of them, and I think as much as you try to do otherwise, you end up basing your selections off the ones you've already chosen rather than on accurate real-room colours. I actually selected, before doing anything else, a pale pink, an apricot-pink, and a white, which were meant to represent the existing colours, but...yeah. I still ended up confused. lol Grabbing more and more samples and going insane basically. I literally had a handbag stuffed full of samples! lol Here are some more pics... I know nothing! Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 12Aug 18, 2009 10:46 am I’m still undecided!!!! Lol. My mum came for a weekend visit and said she liked the colour cards I had, but maybe to go a bit lighter. I mean, I had both lighter and slightly darker shades and she preferred the lighter. At first I was open to that but didn’t really think I’d end up doing it, but now I think I’m sort of leaning towards a nice cool beige cream shade (more stone based than yellow based) as the lighter colour and then a cappuccino colour for the feature wall. Yep. I actually wouldn’t mind having the same colour our feature wall in the bedroom is painted, but that’s a Dulux suede effects colour, and I don’t want suede in the bathroom. It’s not big enough to pull it off I think, and also I need to have those pictures hanging on the wall and I’m not comfortable with the stability of adhesive picture hooks on suede effect painted walls. But I can’t find the exact same shade in normal paint colours as this one…it’s Dulux Suede Effects in French Pebble for anyone who knows an equivalent “flat” paint shade. Some of the lighter colours (sorry, it's hard to take natural photos as there's no natural light and the flash was on and then when it was off, the colours looked too yellow/dark) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I really like the darker colour (the bed wall) for the darker colour in the ensuite... http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z207/graceslick_bucket/ensuitecolours4.jpg And I also like this colour for the paler walls... http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z207/graceslick_bucket/ensuitecolours6.jpg How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Painting ensuite walls – what colour? 15Oct 12, 2010 5:38 pm I'm back, after SO LONG of being undecided and procrastinating! I have now changed my outlook, and have 2 options. 1. I am getting quotes to re-tile the ensuite, as this will free up my paint choices for the painted walls. And I also want to see if I can somehow get a REALLY cheap (but attractive) vanity top. Even if it goes over the existing one, I don't care. I WANT more warm colours. Almost verging on golds and warm apricot-beiges. 2. If I can't afford to get the ensuite re-tiled and/or the vanity top replaced, I will get the grout re-done (re-coloured to almost white, as it's gone grey over the years, with 2 cats, etc), and then go as warm as I can in terms of paint colours but without clashing with the existing un-changeable colours. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Thanks for the suggestion. The space between shower and sinks was too tight. I agree about the toilet location. So I have tried two other options: The lower one is… 3 6118 the step up is 30mm and wanting it to be flat . how much does the concrete have to be lowered .we plan on removing bath and lenghten shower and adding seat. the old bath… 0 11800 |
