Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 04, 2007 7:49 am Hi all
Still just at the pure thinking stage with the build here, but I love the look of the pebble feature in the bathroom (I actually like it when it runs across the floor and up the wall as an accent line) - but I also hate cleaning the bathroom and don't want to add anything (no matter how good it looks) if I'm going to curse it each time I have to clean it.... So I'm wondering, does anyone have the pebble accents in their house? what are they like to clean? - are we talking about a quick wipe down or a fine cleaning with a toothbrush I'm also wary of installing things that date easily (some of the feature tiles in the display homes I've seen you can cleary see that the house was built in a certain year ) - I know these tiles are going to date but are they going to date badly? Thanks in advance for your advice & thoughts Fiona Re: Pebble Feature Tiles - Cleaning & Appearance 2May 04, 2007 3:53 pm Hi Talinsmum,
I have a large area of pebble tiles in my entry….they look great!!! My tiler is one of the best in this town he did an A1 job of laying them and sealing them. They are very easy to keep clean because they were sealed properly. In my bathroom and toilet I have 1 row only as a feature at the top of my tiles of tumbled marble, I did these myself. They are fine to clean as well, but they are not in water at all, they are only features. I also have 1 row of the tumbled marble in black, in my kitchen as a feature, again no problem. What you have to look out for if they are in water…ie: shower, is that they are sealed properly, by a good tiler. If this is done you should not have any problems. Think about it….they are sealed along with the grout your other tiles aren’t! They have a better chance of staying cleaner. Yes the pebble features are quite attractive. The dating issue can be a furphy. We have to make choices that please us today, and we can't necessarily predict how we will feel about it in 5, 10 or 15 years. I'd advise against having them on the bathroom floor though. If you want a small accent strip along the floor OK, but you may regret having them as a main floor surface. The more irregular the floor surface, the more room there is for water and contaminants to accumulate, (and possibly mould). It won't be easy care, and I don't think it's that practical. An important decision that affects service from a bathroom floor is the type of grout. By far the best grout is epoxy. It provides a waterproof grout joint and so has the best stain/soil resistance. The thing is though, it is expensive, and it isn't easy to find a tiler that wants to do it. Tilers may want to dissuade you from choosing epoxy because it is more challenging to apply and clean up when grouting. But it is DEFINITELY in your interest to have epoxy grout. It pays to choose your tiler carefully, and find one that is proficient in working with epoxy grout. Ash. Re: Pebble Feature Tiles - Cleaning & Appearance 5May 06, 2007 8:09 pm Hi Talinsmum -
Depending on the colour you decide to go with for the pebble mosaic/pebble tile - you could choose a grey coloured grout etc... This looks better for longer - some of the lighter grouts definately show up the dirt and can be difficult to clean. would love to know what you decide. Re: Pebble Feature Tiles - Cleaning & Appearance 6May 11, 2007 1:30 pm The pebble highlight of my bathroom wall is really nice! So, I suggest that you go on with that pebbles plan.
