Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 29, 2009 9:37 pm I'm shattered. After all our planning and looking forward to our dream ensuite, we were finally able to try out the shower yesterday.... bad news on the tiling though The fall for the drains just doesn't work with the open shower. This image shows where the issue is. The fall for the shower seems to be in the wrong spot (where the red line is). The arrows show where the water is going. The red circle is a secondary issue - the tiles aren't levelled quite right and water pools there. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The water pooling issue can be fixed pretty easily, just need to relay 4 tiles. But the water running out of the shower is a much bigger issue. My tiler has had a look at it, but I think I need to actually have a conversation with her when we're both looking at it (I was at work today and she was trying to talk me through what could be done - it just wasn't working). She seems to be more concerned about the water pooling... IMHO the water pooling wouldn't be an issue if the shower drained correctly!!! Worse case scenario is that we put a hob in, but I really want to avoid that if possible. Has anyone had any experience in fixing an issue like this? Any suggestions? I'm just sooo disapointed, I absolutely LOVE this ensuite. Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 2May 29, 2009 9:41 pm I have no suggestions I'm sorry, but just wanted to say I love the design of your ensuite Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 3May 29, 2009 9:58 pm Can you increase the length of the glass panel? Once the water 'crosses the line' of the shower fall, it just keeps going. So even with a longer shower screen, the water still wouldn't drain properly. I'll keep it in mind though when going through the options. Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 5May 29, 2009 11:04 pm I reckon that you'd have to change the fall line as well as increase the screen to keep water away from the drain that doesn't drain. shower.jpg something like this - you're going to have to have the four tiles relaid anyway - might as well relay the shower recess to get the fall better. The 2 wastes soo close make things tough, Imagine you have to prevent water from leaving an area, only to fall to the drain. both wastes need gradient to acheive this. (Been a long day excuse my spelling and grama ) or you delineate an area using a brass/chrome/SS strip and all that area falls in. outside falls away.(nah thats sounds crappy) I can see you will end up with tiling shape, to get all the shower water draining into the shower waste. Aside: Was the concrete slab 'set down' for the wet area or do you have a slight step? Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 7Jun 03, 2009 12:26 pm We moved in to our new place on Saturday esg, and have found a similar problem. I actually have a frameless door on one shower and the water just pours out from underneath straight to the drain in the middle of the room. I have had a metal strip, which is rounded on the top, put under the door and am hoping beyond all hope it stops the water to some extent...otherwise I may have to get one of those bigger metal angle strips, which I really didn't want. Doncha hate when things don't work as they should Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 8Jun 03, 2009 12:49 pm We,ve been in our house nearly 3 months now and our ensuite had the opposite problem to yours .... the water wouldn,t go down the drain as the tiles didn,t have enough fall on them....we just thought...what a disaster! How the heck are they going to fix this one! Anyway the tiler came out last week and after a lot of checking levels etc. decided that if he just removed the 4 tiles around the grate then it should work, otherwise he would have to replace all of the floor tiles in the shower as well as the first row of wall tiles and chip up the concrete. Anyway he,s changed the fall on the 4 tiles and it seems to be working ok....not brilliant, but it,s ok. I,m sorry this doesn,t really help you,but hopefully the tiler will come up with a good solution...your ensuite looks fantastic and I can understand how upset you must be.... Cheers Mel Building on 9 acres Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 9Jun 03, 2009 10:16 pm Thanks for your responses everyone The tiler was back today and has relaid 6 tiles, including cutting 2 on the shower side of the drain outside the shower. We studied and studied and studied the water flow and decided if we could just neaten up where the water flows when it leaves the shower then we should be ok. The water takes a nice neat path towards the drain and then because the tiles had a slightly incorrect fall half the water would bypass the drain and pool in the middle of the ensuite. If this solution works I'll be very happy. Having an open shower means that we have to accept water going in all sorts of places and with the second drain being so close to the shower area anyway, if the water travels directly down that drain then it will be fine. Tomorrow morning will be the test, I'm just dying to turn the shower on and try it out but we have to let the grout etc set! If our plan works, then it will mean that yes we'll have some water leaving the shower, but it will only travel a short distance (approx 300mm) to the drain and not make a big mess. *fingers crossed* Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 10Jun 04, 2009 12:06 am Good luck. I hope it all works for you. I just wanted to say that I like your bathroom layout. It has given me inspiration for our bathroom layout (although I suspect our bathroom is a little smaller than your ensuite). Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 11Jun 04, 2009 9:26 am Thanks cmooring (our ensuite is about 1.8m x 4m and has bath, shower, vantiy and toilet). And GOOD NEWS!!!!! The fix up works PERFECTLY!!!! Here's a pic I took this morning. You can just see where the two tiles near the drain have been cut to enhance the fall (another 4 tiles were slightly modified as well to prevent water pooling when/if it does go past the drain). So the water still leaves the shower, but goes directly to the drain and does not make a mess off the floor Perfect perfect perfect Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 12Jun 04, 2009 10:01 am Well done getting finished and overcoming such a potentially terrible problem Enjoy the new bathroom and get on with the kitchen! Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 13Jun 04, 2009 10:44 am Yes, nearly time to sit back and enjoy it!! We still have one issue, the toilet that we were supplied with was warped so now we're waiting for the new toilet to be put in... We'll get there eventually! As for the kitchen, I should update that thread soon - all the patchup slate has been laid and the kitchen gets delivered tomorrow!! (will be installed next week) Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 14Jun 07, 2009 6:04 pm Oh yay esg! I'm so glad it worked out, and without too much delay too! Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 16Jun 08, 2009 9:30 pm Thanks DA Yep Bam, we've been using it for a week or so now and it's absolutely GREAT! Was having a bath tonight and just couldn't stop looking around the ensuite... I just love it SOOOO much We do have a small issue with steam... I noticed two little spots which I suspect were mould, so go onto them with the clove oil and spoke to my sparky about putting another fan in. He was suprised that we were having issues, but thought it was perhaps due to such a small roof space. So this week I'll contact someone about putting a whirlybird in the roof directly above the fan And just because I'm so inlove, here's a couple more photos. Re: Shower disaster - what now??? 19Jun 10, 2009 9:11 am onc_artisan - yes, it's a definite need. I'm a little annoyed that not one of the tradies brought it up. I'm not a builder/tradie and I rely on them to point out things like that. I had actually assumed the fan had been ducted, but never actually asked My mistake, but wont make it again when the Rangehood goes in! Macy - No, it doesn't smell too strong at all. Because it's such a strong product I just put 2 drops into a spray bottle filled with water. Sprayed the area, left it for a little while and then turned the shower on to steam up the room, then popped pantyhose over a soft broom and rubbed the ceiling. The spots were really really small (like just a speck a few mm across). Oh and apparently if straight clove oil is spilt (and left) on an acrylic surface it will burn it, so make sure you wipe up after you've put the drops in the spray bottle. 9 24869 This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
