Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 28, 2009 11:18 pm Hi I really want timber benchtops in the bathroom and kitchen and powder room. Is this unrealistic? Will they wear badly? If I do go with timber, do I have to do the laundry benchtop in timber as well so that it doesn't look odd? The powder room is off the laundry?? Re: Timber benchtops 2May 29, 2009 2:39 pm I had timber benchtops in bathroom at the place i was renting at last and they looked beatuiful. Seems as though they had a lot of laquer on them though. prob to keep as much water out as possible. I just used to wipe them over and rub in beeswax to keep them nice. I wouldnt have them in the laundry though. Lots of chemicals and detergents are used in there and maybe damage the benchtop pretty quickly. A friend who I clean for has timber in the bathroom and a timber kitchen (her hubby makes timber furniture so yeah). You would probably have to polish it regularly with a timber polish to make sure it stays looking good (keep water marks etc away). However if the varnish / lacquer did deteriorate then it's not the end of the world, you can sand it back and re-do. Just higher maintenance I guess. In the laundry I think it would be nice, but it depends what you use your laundry for . . . . potentially all sorts of chemicals. The other thing you could investigate is stained / oiled timber, like what you would have outdoors, that may be easier to maintain and more "water resistant", just won't have the really nice glossy finish . . I'm not sure if it's viable but could be an option to look into. Re: Timber benchtops 4May 29, 2009 9:20 pm I'm building a Sydney Blue Gum vanity for the bathroom at the moment and have lans for timber benchtops in the laundry as well. For timber benchtops in the kitchen/ bathroom etc. you want a tough hard wearing finish, the norm is to use a floor polyurethane finish. I also treataed my timber kitchen benchtops with an anti-fungal/anti-rot treatment before staining/lacquering. I intend to do the same with the vanity Re: Timber benchtops 5Jun 27, 2009 12:51 am Thought I could post this... http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv70 ... 1246023607 Where you are coming from is where you are going to...
