Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 21, 2009 11:34 pm Hi, Was just wondering if anyone has had cracked floor tiles from their underfloor heating? We have had underfloor heating in our bathroom for almost 4 years, and last month when I put the underfloor heating on, one of the tiles cracked. I am mostly sure that it was due to the heating. Sooo ... does any one know if cracking tiles is common? Is it because I might have cheap tiles (I can't remember if I do or not)? Is it just luck of the draw and it happens sometimes (to the unlucky)? Could it be badly installed? Just want to make sure I don't make the same mistake next time if there is a good reason. Thanks Re: Cracked tiles from underfloor heating 2May 27, 2009 7:47 pm Hi, I am not a tiler, but I used to repair concrete in factories so I know a bit about expansion and movement. The tiles are brittle so any movement and they will break. If there is not a control joint along the tiles with flexible sealant instead of grout then the tiles have nowhere to go when they expand with the heat. They must crush each other and possibly push upwards in the middle. If the concrete cracks underneath due to movement of the soil the tiles will crack in the same place above. If the tiles have come loose from the concrete then maybe they will crack when walked on. Just some possibilities. 1 10132 Plumbers 'can be' plumbers, made all the worse by self certification which the building surveyor invariably accepts as proof of compliance!
