Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 16, 2009 8:32 pm I need to tell my SS where we want the batten lights over the vanities. Because we've deleted the mirrors & are having custom-made shaving cabinets, I don't know what to tell him. I don't want to have the batten light fitting too low, otherwise the light fitting shades will be in the way of the doors. This is what we'll be installing. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For those of you who have shaving cabinets, how far above these, are your lights located ? This is what I've calculated so far : 850mm from floor to vanity top 183mm to cover the height of basin & mixer 30mm between the highest point of the mixer & bottom or shaving cabinet 800mm for the height of the shaving cabinet ?????? distance from shav. cabinet top to batten light Anyone got any suggestion please ?? Actually, donuts if you're out there, as you've got this light, could you possibly measure for me the distance from the middle of the base plate to the very bottom of the glass shade ( see photo) ? Ours was put up too high and we have ended up with a hole where it used to be which still has to be filled in & painted. I can see that happening never Our light kind of rests on the mirror, but I have seen it sitting a bit above the mirror as well (maybe in another pic of them you put up Southies? can't remember). I think my dad thought that by resting it on the edge of the mirror it would provide more support than just the wires holding it there in the back. But maybe it can be glued or something on to the wall to give more support, in which case the batten hole could be higher. Not sure. ANYWAY. I have measured from the middle of the chrome base plate thing to the bottom of the shade and got 7 centimetres. Let's see if I can do better. I've got a pic here (you can also see the hole where the original batten was ). Behind the back plate you can see in your pic is another littler plate with all the workings and attachment bits and bobs. When my dad installed ours he rested the bit between the back plate and the littler plate on the top of the mirror. So that the bottom of the back plate actually sits a little lower than the top of the mirror: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The pic isn't very good. If it's still not explained properly let me know and I will try to get a better picture tomorrow. Re: Vanity light 5May 17, 2009 9:08 am Thanks for that donuts! I kind of understand. Though it might be a moot point as I now realise I have a further problem. As the shaving cabinet will be 15cm deep, these lights won't protrude enough from the wall to be able to shine lighting onto the mirrored doors These lights are perfect for only mirrors. I think I've now got to choose a totally different light fitting!!! Aaarrgghh Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Vanity light 6May 17, 2009 4:30 pm What about a similar track light on ceiling that would be just in front of mirrored cabinets? Re: Vanity light 7May 17, 2009 4:41 pm But wouldn't that be too high ? The other issue is that the wiring has been done in the wall & the sparkies need to know at what point on the wall to install the batten light. Too late to change our minds about re-positioning elsewhere. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Vanity light 8May 17, 2009 4:49 pm Bummer.......but you have to find a light that the base is wider than your cabinet so the base is flush with cabinet so lights are in front - or you could use the light that you like (like donuts) and mount it on piece of wood the same depth as your cabinet so it is nice and flush and the lights are in front .........i don't know if that makes sense Re: Vanity light 9May 17, 2009 5:01 pm bluesteel Bummer.......but you have to find a light that the base is wider than your cabinet so the base is flush with cabinet so lights are in front - or you could use the light that you like (like donuts) and mount it on piece of wood the same depth as your cabinet so it is nice and flush and the lights are in front .........i don't know if that makes sense Yes bluesteel you make perfect sense & I've been thinking about the same thing & adding a baseplate to the light, but wondering how it would look ?? I don't think it'll work, aesthetically Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Vanity light 10May 17, 2009 5:08 pm I think you will be hard pressed to find lights that are 15cm out from base - but look at exterior lights also these are made to be away from wall and lots are v swish............can't wait to see results Re: Vanity light 14May 17, 2009 8:45 pm bummer Southies! Have you spoken to someone in a lighting store, they may have some ideas? otherwise maybe something like this? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ or maybe some multi-directional spotlight type ones that you see in kitchens sometimes? Re: Vanity light 15May 17, 2009 9:16 pm thanks donuts, yes saw that one & some similar. Their projection unfortunately is not enough to clear the cabinet. Yep, alos thought of spotlights. Soooooo don't like them, but might just have to resort to that in the end. Still have to know how far above the benchtop to position the batten light in the meantime. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Vanity light 16May 17, 2009 9:31 pm yes it's hard to judge without the mirror there! Re: Vanity light 17May 18, 2009 10:06 pm can EB install these lights later as they will be installing the kitchen appliances once you get in can they install the lights at this point so you can sort out your cabinets in the meantime?? Re: Vanity light 18May 19, 2009 7:19 am Yes, the sparkies should be coming bakc maybe next week to finalise the batten lights, etcc. All the wiring is complete, so no changes can be made now. I've decided to have the batten lights over the vanities at 2100 FFL. The shaving cabinets will be 700mm high. My only problem will be to find lights, after handover, that will project more than 150mm from the wall to get past the top of the cabinets. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Vanity light 19May 19, 2009 8:00 am I haven't seen these particular ones in any lighting shops, but they seem to have a flexible mount that might let the light clear the cabinet? Maybe there's something similar around... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Is your shaving cabinet door hinged or sliding? If it's sliding, you could use Bluesteel's idea and mount a piece of timber almost flush with the top of the cabinet. Painted to match the wall, you'd never see it there, especially once the light was attached. There are 11 pages of bathroom lights here, not sure if any will do the job: http://www.thelightingsuperstore.co.uk/category.asp?catcode=26&pageno=1 Re: Vanity light 20May 19, 2009 8:20 am Thanks kek for you help. DH is tiling all the way to the cornices, so can't use your idea (& donuts') of extra piece attached to the wall. I"ve been looking at picture lights, as they're probably the closest I can come to an acceptable style but somehow they don't quite fit a bathroom scene.
