I'm worried about it leaking. (probably an unresonable worry). I also reckon over time they'll get grotty and disgusting. I'm going to have some glass shelves that can be removed to be cleaned properly. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 4May 12, 2009 12:48 pm I wanted niches, couldn't have them (don't let's start THAT discussion again.... ). So now I want glass shelves, but they have to be just the right glass shelves and the only ones I can find that I'm happy with have a price tag that doesn't please my husband. As i think over time they will get very grubby mouldy as water will constantly be sitting in them. I think glass shelves or something much cleaner and there are some designs that come with suction caps so there is no need to screw into the tiles. Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 6May 12, 2009 12:55 pm We hadnt even heard of or seen a niche when we first did our plans. Kinda bummed about it. I really like them. I just bought some corner shelves to screw in. its just behind the shower screen on the right where we have a 30cm piece of wall before the glass door starts. I got these on ebay for 30 each and they look great. Cant wait to screw them in. made sure i measured correctly though. We just couldn't warm to the glass shelves for some reason. Time will tell if that was a good or bad choice I suppose! Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 10May 17, 2009 10:41 pm When I went to pay my deposit today and asked about the niches. It's going to cost me $350 per niche so I decided to only get one in the ensuite My showers are going to be the standard 900x900 so thought they would be good to save on space. Hi Joles, I like the thought of glass shelves too - is something that PD are including or are you going to get them seperately and install later on? If you're installing later on, do you know where I could get some? Thanks! There's quite a large range at E&S trading in Essendon. They have some that have a slim metal rail across the front about 5cm above the shelf itself. I'll probably get those, then nothing can fall off. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Our Build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72518 Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 14Sep 17, 2014 10:52 am Shower niches are a great idea and work well if they are water proofed properly however can be hard to clean. The basket idea is a little ugly good point cheap and easy to replace. Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 15Sep 17, 2014 12:44 pm worked for a showerscreen company as previously stated. Heaps of problems with niches and resulting mould/scum. Same with siliconed to the wall glass shelving. It's simply an eventuality if you use it regularly. Go for a bracket mount glass shelf which can be removed and has sufficient drainage around it(like the one pictured above). Actually if had my way even the showerscreen would be removable for a good scrub/pressure clean outside Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 16Sep 18, 2014 1:21 pm If niches or recesses are done properly ( meaning built well with good waterproofing ) they shouldn't be a problem at all. If there is a problem with them leaking then I'd be concerned with how the rest of the bathroom is going to survive seeing as whoever does the floor and wall waterproofing probably did the niches as well. As for them looking grotty over time, in my experience we have always tried to steer the customer into having them higher up away from the " splash zone ". Stewie Re: Shower niche or shelves or baskets 17Sep 18, 2014 1:59 pm i love my niches, my only issue i have with the en-suite one was i wished we had extended it longer so i can put more stuff on it! Our niche is at the other end of the shower so doesn't get splash on it unless the hubby is splashing my son with the hand held shower head on purpose! Ours are not in the splash zone and apparently will stay quite dry. They also explained to us how it's waterproofed properly so I'm not worried. The builder also recommended a small glass shelf which they installed which is just for soap. I don't think a niche would be any dirtier than any other part of the shower. A quick wipe and it should be clean of soap marks. Anything is better than the rusty basket hanging on our current shower lol Basically. If the shelves are fixed then they will be screwed in just the same as the rest of the carcass.
