Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 06, 2009 9:32 pm We are planning on installing soap holders in the shower. But we are concerned that if we drill through the grout, water might seep in and cause problems. What can we put to make it water tight? Also is there a special drill-bit for tiles/grout? Ta! \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Installing soap holders in the shower 2May 06, 2009 10:45 pm drill through the tile not the grout. I remember someone suggesting to put some tape in the spot where you intend to drill so the drill bit doesn't slip on the shiny tile. Remove tape remnants afterwards of course. Re: Installing soap holders in the shower 3May 07, 2009 4:40 pm This is what i use for drilling tiles, and granite etc, they are called core drills and i use them in conjuction with a suction cup drilling guide and water pump pack. Never cracked a tile since using these, no chips, just perfect holes every time. How do you waterproof the hole/screw/whatever afterwards? I use a small amount of neutral cure kitchen and abthroom silicon (smells like vinegar), this type of silicon is recommended for wet areas and as such resists mould buildup. Drill your holes and insert your mechanical anchor, if screwing a fixing plate to the fastener apply silicon to the back of the plate prior to screwing back to the wall. If the soap dish is directly screwed into the fastener, i would apply the silicon tothe outer rim of the mounting surface. This should stop the ingress of water no worries at all Ben LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: Installing soap holders in the shower 6May 07, 2009 10:42 pm kexkez drill through the tile not the grout. Thanks for the input kexkez... so do I really drill on the tiles and not the grout? What happens if I drill on the grout? Do I get better results? \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Installing soap holders in the shower 7May 07, 2009 10:45 pm Thanks BUILDERSEDGE. You seem to work on these things a lot. I'm doing this for 2 soap holders only. Your tools seem very expensive for 1 time use. I was wondering some not-so-expensive drill bit would do. And do I really need to drill on the tile itself instead of just the grout? I'll follow the silicone tip for the waterproofing.
