Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 27, 2009 5:42 pm Hey all Just wondering if you have to have obscured glass on your toilet, bathroom and ensuite windows? Last 3 houses we've built have had obscured glass so was a surprise to hear this. We're in Victoria, and apparently it's only if you have neighbours living areas facing towards your bathrooms & toilets. Thanks! Our toilet faces the next door neighbours window, yet we didn't have to have (and don't actually have) obscure glass. It's a pain not to because I will have to put a window covering on it or obscure it. No one wants to use the toilet and be able to look at the next door neighbours house, or anyone walking down their driveway. Our bathroom window is massive, it has obscure glass because we requested it (forgot about the toilet window however ) not because we had to have it. It is on the second level, but stepping into the bath nudie (as you do) the neighbours could still see in, as could people over the road or even in the street. I don't understand the rules as to why or why not, but they probably should have a stand in the street or neighours house rule and see what you might be copping an eyeful of and then decide about the window. Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 5Apr 27, 2009 5:59 pm I didn't want to have to put window furnishings up straight away for the bathrooms, so we chose translucent glass for the bathroom and ensuite. It's not so much for my peace of mind.. I just don't want to scare the neighbours. If I was 6 foot, blonde and a size 8, I'd probably just parade around without a care. Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 6Apr 27, 2009 6:24 pm Ours are leadlight...made them myself...look sensational...but not exactly complete privacy...I don't care too much...if the old sheila next door is desperate to look through the fence...good luck to her. Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 7Apr 27, 2009 6:33 pm I don't think you have to have obscured glass but in bathroom windows you have to have safety glass. I hate most obscured glass, it's more difficult to clean. Also if you open the window for ventilation in warmer weather you lose the privacy aspect of it anyway unless you have something else as well. I didn't ever try it out but in a house we sold where a nice big shrub had been removed I thought about a budget fix with some poles from the eaves and a bit of shadecloth or lattice, at least until the new shrub grew tall enough. Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 8Apr 27, 2009 6:43 pm Macy I don't think you have to have obscured glass but in bathroom windows you have to have safety glass. That depends on the size and location of the window. There's some regulation about it, but I have no idea what the basis is - I have a feeling that one determining factor is window height above the bath or floor? Whatever, we've never had safety glass in any of our bathrooms. Our bathrooms and toilet have clear glass in the windows and we just have venetians on them. I hate obscure glass - I think I was traumatised by the nasty yellowish patterned obscure glass in the sidelight in our old house... I hate obscure glass - I think I was traumatised by the nasty yellowish patterned obscure glass in the sidelight in our old house... I agree... I much prefer to have clear glass and use venetians.. Alot of the obscure glass you can still see through.. whilst not the same as looking through clear glass you can still see the outline of someone standing naked in the bathroom! so most peoples houses I have seen still put blinds on obscure glass, so to me that seems silly to have it in the first place. Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 11Apr 27, 2009 7:13 pm I have got obscured glas in the toilet, bathroom and the ensuite and will be putting a roller blind blockout material in these rooms, well for now it is a roller blind it may soon change Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 12Apr 27, 2009 8:13 pm I'm not sure if you "have" to do it in SA but it is certainly standard practice, all new and old houses I have seen have obscure glass in bathroom and toilet windows and was standard in our specifications. I've just built in VIC and have a "reserve" (basically a lane way) next to me and the builder claims that they aren't required to install obscured glass. Then across the lane is my neighbors lounge. Both of which my bathrooms are very easy to see! Re: Do you HAVE to have obscured glass in bathrooms & toilets?? 15Jun 11, 2009 9:00 pm No you don't have to. You can put clear glass all around...
