Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 24, 2009 6:32 pm After the door saga - I didn't think I would encounter another colour mistake so quickly.......WRONG!! I don't like my feature tiles. Unlike the doors, they will not grow on me, they can't be covered up with plants/decking/fencing etc, they are supposed to be the stand out in my bathroom and I HATE them They are a natural stone so they have come up an orange colour rather than the tan colour I was hoping for, I am also sure they are the wrong one. I think the color girl wrote down the wrong code and stupid me signed off on it so I'm to blame unfortunately Anyway so far the tiler has only laid the powder room tiles so all is not lost. He wasn't there today and I assume he won't be back until Monday...I'm hoping that in the meantime I can find a replacement tile. I went out to National Tiles this afternoon and found a tile I like - a glass mosaic...problem it isn't the same size as my previous feature tile so it won't fit into the space where the original feature tile is in the powder room. So in my opinion the powder room is a lost cause - we will rip the tile splashback down after handover and have it done again..unless the tiler will accept a nice payment to rip down his work and start again If I can get my hand on the replacement tiles before the tiler starts on Monday I should be good though because he hasn't done any tiling in the bathrooms, so I'm hoping it is as simple case as me handing over the new tiles and him laying them... So here lays the issue. The girl at National Tiles said that some stores may stock the tile I selected and so I can take them straight away, otherwise there is a waiting period of 5-10 days. I somehow doubt PD will delay my tiling for up to 2 weeks just because of my mistake, so if I can't get a replacement tile by Monday/Tuesday I'm assuming I'm stuck with what I have. I also can't get them to leave it blank because it won't pass the Certificate of Occupancy. If this is the case, we WILL rip them down after handover and start again. Keeping them is not an option They are not bad, they are just not at all what I ordered and don't go with any of my selections So I'm begging Melbourne people in particular. Do you know of any tile shops that are open on Sundays (I'm assuming everything is closed tomorrow due to Anzac Day) and that carry tile stocks in their stores ready to take that day? Also any ideas on other ways I can get around this issue?!! DH is away and I need all the help I can get!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tile drama 2Apr 24, 2009 6:38 pm Bel, don't rush. Ring your SS. The tiler can come and do everythig else.... then give him a cashy to come back and do your bits. I'd rather do that than rush this weekend and make another mistake if I was you. And you can leave them blank and still get COA..... you only need tiles to the shower bases to get that. Wall tiles have nothing to do with getting COA. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Tile drama 4Apr 24, 2009 7:28 pm I found one store for you that's open on Sunday: http://www.hynestiles.com.au/faq.php They're open 10am-5pm. Here's another one: http://www.tileliquidators.com.au/contact-tile-liquidators.htm They're open 9am-5pm. I don't know where these shops are because I have no clue about Melbourne, but I hope this helps. Judie Re: Tile drama 5Apr 24, 2009 7:31 pm I think most shops are open tomorrow after 1pm though....just call after 1pm to be sure. Cheers Re: Tile drama 6Apr 24, 2009 7:38 pm Excellent thanks everyone - will call all of those places on Monday I know what you are saying Jo - I wasn't going to worry if I didn't find a tile - but I found one I really like, so if I can get it this weekend and have it installed with the rest of the tiles on Monday then that is the best thing! I didn't know it was only shower bases that were required for a COO - that's even better news! In that case I'm not so worried anymore, I'll just tell them to leave them off until the tiles arrive and see if the tiler will come back and install them then. Thank-you Jo - probably the best news I have had all day My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tile drama 7Apr 24, 2009 7:43 pm At worst, it's the floor for C of O..... but I'm almost sure it's only shower bases. Pretty sure it's not walls. And they can issue a conditional C of O anyway, like VJ did. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Tile drama 8Apr 24, 2009 7:45 pm Excellent!! Do people think I should ask the tiler to remove the splashback for the powder room too and relay my new tiles there. Obviously I'd give him a cashy for this as its tearing down his perfectly good work, but I have no idea what would be reasonable. On another topic - anyone want some free feature tiles? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tile drama 9Apr 24, 2009 7:57 pm Just say the magic work "cashy" and watch his eyes light up what's the worst he can do...say no. Just say to him then, ah well I thought I would offer it to you first because you have done such an excellent job. Re: Tile drama 11Apr 24, 2009 8:28 pm "cashy" is one magic word "beer" be another and if you're headed down Hoppers way Beaumont Tiles is down there too ... no idea if they are open or not. Re: Tile drama 12Apr 25, 2009 8:30 am Another quick question In the hope that I do get the feature tiles I want, how do I know how many to get? I noticed in the delivery of tiles they have one box containing approx 12 sheets of the current feature tile. I can't find anywhere on my plans where it shows the measurements or how many tiles my feature strip needs. We are getting horizontal strips in both showers, one horizontal strip across the bath and the powder room splashback. I was thinking of ordering 20 sheets but don't want to be short....can anyone remember how many boxes or sheets of mosaics they needed for their feature tiles, it might give me a better idea. Thanks guys My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tile drama 13Apr 25, 2009 8:33 am Get your plans out and do some calculations. Seriously, no-one else's measuremnts will matter. Take your tile plan that National tiles will have given you with the tile layout, and your house plan with the dimensions. The shop will be able to work it out if you're not sure. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Tile drama 14Apr 25, 2009 8:36 am That's what I tried to do, but I was getting really odd numbers Never been good at maths Will find my plans - and take them with me, hope they can help me like you say Jo I just thought hearing other people's numbers might give me a ballpark range...never mind My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tile drama 16Apr 26, 2009 3:15 pm Well good news...I got tiles and I pick them up tomorrow morning I get them from Hynes Tiles in Hoppers Crossing and have to pick them up from the warehouse in Williamstown tomorrow around 8:00 so I should be able to get them to the tiler before he starts anything!! I forgot to take a pic but they are little mosaic squares in soft brown/blue/green tones - hard to explain but they work well with the Oyster Linea. They aren't as nice as the ones I saw at National Tiles the other day - but I still really like them and the fact I could get them straight away was a bonus too - only $350 for all of them too - I got 15 sheets. Now I have to decide how wide I want the feature strip and if I still want to go horizontal or change to vertical Will update with what the tiler thinks tomorrow. I am also hoping he will say yes to ripping down the splashback in the powderroom and putting the new tiles up there too! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tile drama 17Apr 26, 2009 3:33 pm you forgot to take a pic??? they sound lovely. Re: Tile drama 19Apr 27, 2009 9:29 am Ok so went and picked up the tiles this morning and delivered them to the house. The tiler wasn't there so I left him a note explaining these are the new feature tiles and explained how I wanted them laid. I left my mobile number for him to call if there are any other problems. I have to take the kids swimming in a minute, but will drop by periodically throughout the day and try to catch him. I got some photos - but they aren't showing the true colours of the tile properly, but will post them anyway. Am trying to figure out whether to do rows of 3, 4 or 5....leaning towards 4 now....3 looks to small, and 5 looks to thick...I would prefer an odd number but there is nothing in between so thought 4.... What do you think? The new tiles - the brown is coming up much more than it does in reality...its a really soft combination or brown/blue/green/cream... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Row of 5 in between my wall tile..this would make it the same thickness as the wall tile - was worried it might be a bit much...especially around the bath hob... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Should mention all tiles will be layed horizontally The other thing is they said I would need just under 12 sheets to do it based on rows of 4...I ordered 15 to be safe, but if I do decided to do rows of 5 I'm not sure if I will have enough My karma ran over your dogma Thank you @.
