Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 15, 2009 11:33 pm Heya ppl... Just bought a new house and its only a couple of years old so nice and modern but a major downfall was the people who built it obviously stooged on their basins/taps etc.. Lovely modern vanities and PLASTIC basins and PLASTIC taps.. ahh cant believe it!! The taps actually look like those ones back in the 80's. yuck. Even plastic taps in shower!!!! So i was just wondering if its possible to have the old basins cut out and have nice porcelain ones put in?? (with the stainless sorta tapware) surely they have a standard sort of size so that wouldnt be an issue, but i just wonder about the work required in getting the old one out? would it be a big job?? (i'd definitely use a plumber)... any advice appreciated!! Ben Re: Replacing vanity basins.. 2Apr 16, 2009 6:46 am Its pretty easy really. Make sure you take the measurements of the old basin when you go shopping for a new one so you can get one that will either fit the existing hole (not so easy) or larger, which means you will need to make the cut out a bit bigger. So if your tops are laminex, you'll need someone handy with a jigsaw to do the new cut out. And then you get to choose your taps. Shower ones are easy, they should just screw straight into the combo in the wall, but you won't be able to change those to a mixer. Basin ones, unless you know what your doing, yes get a plumber, but here you can have a mixer if you prefer and don't mind mixing and matching between mixer and taps. Re: Replacing vanity basins.. 4Apr 16, 2009 5:06 pm When you say plastic basins, do you mean a separate acrylic basin, set into a vanity top, or one of those all-in-one moulded vanity top/basin jobs, like this one? Re: Replacing vanity basins.. 5Apr 16, 2009 7:04 pm kek no not like the one in the pic ... its the plastic basin set into the top of a vanity ... so im assuming its only stuck down with some silicone or similar and they just run a blade around and cut it out? Re: Replacing vanity basins.. 6Apr 16, 2009 7:20 pm Ben01 mixers are just the single handle arent they??... where you lift it up to turn it on and swings side to side for hot/cold??? Yup, thats them.
