Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 15, 2009 6:07 pm Hi, Through either bad design or workmanship, our 'Fan/Light' is going to be off-centre in the toilet. The roof truss runs right through the centre of the toilet! We would now prefer just a light on a battern holder rather than an off-centre 'fanlight'. Does anyone know if i is a legal requirement to have a fan in a toilet as part of a new house? Is it part of the certificate of occupancy? The toilet is located on the outer edge o the house where a window can be opened. I always thought you had to have either an openable window or a fan. Our builder is trying to tell us we need both. Is he correct? Our current home built in 1998 only has a battern holder light & the window can be opened. Have things changed since then? Cheers, James Re: Is a fan in the toilet with a window a legal requirement? 2Apr 15, 2009 6:11 pm Im not honestly sure.. but i know we have to have a fan and we don't have a window in our toilet.. I would have assumed though that you could have a toilet without a fan if there was a window. But my assumptions are often incorrect. Have you checked with your council? Re: Is a fan in the toilet with a window a legal requirement? 3Apr 15, 2009 6:18 pm Jamestheoz, you dont say where you live but in SA, yes, it is a legal requirement to have a fan in a windowless toilet. Not required if you have a window which can open to provide natural ventilation, ie you do not have to have both a fan and a window. My parents have a house that has 2 windowless toilets, the upstairs one does have natural light thru a skylight but both had to have fans. This isn't just new houses - it is also renovations - if you do a renovation which creates a windowless toilet or blocks off the window to the existing toilet you have to install a fan. A lot of the displays don't have fans if the toilet has a window. I have a few electrial plans floating around...... hmmm I've got one here that doesn't have a fan in a toilet with a window. So maybe here you don't. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Is a fan in the toilet with a window a legal requirement? 6Apr 15, 2009 6:52 pm We only had to have a fan in the ensuite because it's a combined bathroom/toilet, the extra toilet we had to add one too. Wish I had asked for separate switches for the light and the fan so you can use it in the middle of the night without putting the rocket launcher fan on... Asked an electrician who happened to be in the house doing something else how much it would cost to change to separate switches and he said upwards of $80 because the cables weren't separated or something. Oh poop. Guess we'll put up with it. Re: Is a fan in the toilet with a window a legal requirement? 7Apr 16, 2009 3:59 am Thanks for the replies guys, yes I am building in VIC. Meeting the builder on-site in a few days time. I would love to be able to say we don't need or want the fan because there is a window there. I wouldn't mind if the 'fanlight' could be centralised but It isn't an option as the roof truss is right in the bloody way! Cheers, jamestheoz Re: Is a fan in the toilet with a window a legal requirement? 8Apr 16, 2009 7:30 am You don't need a fan if you have the correct amount of ventilation through the window... The building code would only require a fan if the window was not big enough! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Is a fan in the toilet with a window a legal requirement? 9Apr 16, 2009 2:32 pm We just finished doing our electricals, and we didn't require a fan in the toilet as it has a window already. That said, we opted for a fan with a timed button so if someone makes a smell in the toilet, they can press the button and 10 minutes later, the fan turns itself off. Its very cheap to install the wiring now (with the walls/gyprock off) ... and then you've always got it there later if you decide that you do need it. Thanks Draftroom that definitely helps a heap.
