Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 14, 2009 10:10 pm We are currently undertaking major renovations and tomorow our kitchen is ripped out and it will be turned into a bathroom & hallway. The bathroom will measure 2m x 2.7m. Now that I've managed to break my foot my bathroom ideas have changed. I now want a walk in shower in case anything like this happens again, and lets face it i am only going to get older. The bathroom will only have a vanity basin and shower and towel racks. My research says i can get a 1.5 metre glass panel from Stegbar for around $900 would that be our only cost or does it change the tiling to have a walk in shower? Any pros or cons having a walk in shower? Also the size of the room means we would have to have the shower directly in front when you open the door, what are your thoughts on this? I'd prefer it elsewhere in the bathroom but for that size and a 1.2 metre vanity basin its not possible (I dont think a small basin is do able with 3 kids). Maybe a half brick screen in front of the shower but i imagine they are very expensive. Any ideas? Thanks for any input. Re: Walk in shower 2Apr 14, 2009 10:21 pm sorry lofo, do you mean this bathroom will be the only one for the whole family (or is this an ensuite/2nd bath)? I think WIS is a wonderful idea, I think seeing it when you first walk in does not greatly matter, perhaps post on this thread your plans, maybe someone can help you with that. Me not so good at that stuff! But the tiling, although there will be more, is still standard tiling. I think with a WIS you are thinking more along the lines of a "wet room" whereby the room is virtually completely tiled (except ceiling) so that no door is require on shower and it doesn't matter). Search wet room on this forum and see what comes up... Annie A thankful person is a happy person. PS. Edited to say i did a search but couldnt find anything, only bought up posts with the word 'room' in it so i must be doing it wrong. Re: Walk in shower 4Apr 14, 2009 10:39 pm I think to be a "real" wet room, the whole room has to be waterproof, hence tiles on all walls, but hey, your idea is fantastic too, both rooms would look great. You do what you prefer... A thankful person is a happy person. I've done a couple of very rough designs in the space you've mentioned. Having the walk-in shower (second design) and a 1200 wide vanity would be really squeezing it for room with the toilet. So probably you'd want to have a max 1000 wide vanity. In that case, that second design with the proper walk-in shower I think would work fine Re: Walk in shower 7Apr 14, 2009 11:05 pm A thankful person is a happy person. [/color]My hobby design blog: http://aviewondesign.blogspot.com/ Re: Walk in shower 8Apr 14, 2009 11:09 pm oh you're so clever esg. I can't figure out how to put a diagram up but for the 2 x 2.7m room we are just looking at a 1.2m long vanity (about 1/2 metre wide) and walk in shower without door that you don't have to step into anything, its level with the ground and just a 1.5 metre glass panel. The door opens in on the top right hand of your drawing(where you currently have the shower in the top drawing). We thought the only way we could fit the shower & vanity in would be to put the shower in front of the door as you walk in going along the 2.7m wall (along where you have the toilet) and the vanity alongside the door (where your purple colour is) (which is along the hall wall). Hopefully I've explained it ok. Thanks also for the pics, it looks like a similar sized room although we won't have any windows either, just a skylight. Re: Walk in shower 9Apr 15, 2009 6:57 am lofoten, here's a template file - it's just an excel file, each square is 10cmx10cm and the black border marks out the room - it's 2m x 2.7m. You can play around with placement of things, all I do is just shade in the squares with different colours - this is how I started out designing our bathroom & kitchen. It's a rough way of doing it, but it's quite a handy way of being able to see exactly how much space you'll have. http://www.spencer-gardner.com/gallery_ ... e.xls.html In the pics I put up for you, the purple bit was meant to be the doorway - sorry, forgot to label it. Also, if you're wanting the shower to have more privacy, there's no reason you can't have it running across the 'top' of the bathroom (same position as I have it in the second picture). My bathroom is only 1.8m wide and I'm having a walk in shower - so will only have a 1m glass panel with an 80cm gap to walk through. Whilst it's not the biggest space, I think it will work well as 80cm is a fairly standard door size, so I can't see it being an issue with the shower. a 2 x 2.7m bathroom for only shower & Vanity is quite a nice big area IMHO We're squeezing bath, shower vanity & toilet into a 1.8m x 4m ensuite (the link that Annietom put up before - thats our ensuite, well it will be! ). A tip for uploading snapshots from the excel file - if you're running Windows Vista then you will have access to a program called "Snipping tool" - open the excel file, open snipping tool and select the section of the file you want to capture - click save and then you can attach the image on posts here on the forum. Hope that makes sense Re: Walk in shower 10Apr 15, 2009 9:31 pm Thanks Esg, it's all a bit technical for me, uploading, snipping and all that I did check your link and it took me to your gallery so not a site to play around with. We are meeting with the builder tomorrow to discuss what goes where in the bathroom. He ripped out our kitchen today so the space looks completely different. Now the joys of having no kitchen, 3 little kiddies and a broken foot begin. Re: Walk in shower 11Apr 15, 2009 9:42 pm Yeh walkthru shower is a great idea Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Walk in shower 12Apr 16, 2009 10:19 am Just a bit of a ridiculous questions about the walk-in shower, but do you get cold in the shower? I know when I have a shower I just can't wait to close the door - there could be a breeze or something. sorry, I am just curious, and quite like the sleek look of the shower. Re: Walk in shower 13Apr 16, 2009 11:02 am If your having a walk in shower I would be sure I get a professional to do it there are alot of steps to have done to ensure it doesn't leak and waterproofing is the utmost importance. I looked at doing this in my bathroom but it was just too much work. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. The room is tiled to the ceiling all round, much like a wet room. There are heaps of pro's for this idea, only one con...there is water splash. I don't mind, I was totally aware of this, but couldn't justify having a door if i at anytime needed help with showering. It will be so much easier if i ever do.There is only 2 of us, so any splash dries quickly. I absolutely love it, wish i had done it years ago. As to being cold, no, i have a rain shower and that is fabulous too. As you open my door you are looking at the shower, but i have a lock on my door! My door opens out as per regulations. bathroom12 (Medium).jpg As you can see the mat is wet, I don't use one now, it's faster to air dry. It will be a similar size to yours. I have it set up so that it could be used as on ensuite for the second bedroom (don't know if I'll keep that). I am going to have a solid tiled wall between the vanity and shower, no glass. My only concern, as people here have pointed out, is I will not be able to have a big window. When I was at the Home Ideas Show I spoke to a bathroom designer who was great. She mentioned things like having a tiled mural on the wall facing the opening or even having a fern in the shower. This might make it a bit more attractive if the shower opening faced the bathroom door. Re: Walk in shower 17Apr 19, 2009 6:55 pm lofoten Thanks Esg, it's all a bit technical for me, uploading, snipping and all that I did check your link and it took me to your gallery so not a site to play around with. Oops sorry. The link would have taken you to a page where you could download an excel file - you can't do anything on the actual site because, as you said, it's just my photo gallery I wasn't able to attach the spreadsheet to this post directly. ElephantGuy - have you considered putting in a glass brick window on the side of the shower near the entrance way (ie, so as you walk in the bathroom you're facing the shower entrance and on that far wall is the window. That would allow some light in, and keep some privacy by a) being a glass brick window and b) being at the end of the shower, so people wouldn't be standing directly in front of it whilst they showered. I like the idea of having a fern in/near the shower - I suppose it would cope ok with the occasional shampoo splash etc? I might play around with that look once our ensuite is done. A nice way to bring the outside in Re: Walk in shower 18Apr 19, 2009 10:14 pm esg ElephantGuy - have you considered putting in a glass brick window on the side of the shower near the entrance way (ie, so as you walk in the bathroom you're facing the shower entrance and on that far wall is the window. That's not a bad idea. I may have a water tank along the outside of that wall so the view may not be great but putting in the glass bricks will let the light in. I'm going to slep on that. Electrical just got back to me and said the most they can provide is a single power point on the Bedroom 1 side of that wall. After handover, your towel rail installer… 2 3851 Do you really want to accommodate the window? What is on the outside of the window? Do you want to be able to see your towels from outside? I would blank the window from… 2 8409 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says. Thanks 2 9568 |
