Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 10, 2009 1:46 pm Hi, I'm finally looking at redoing my bathroom. I want to pick and buy my own vanity, bath, toilet, taps etc. and get someone to completely gut the old bathroom and install my new things. Any sugguestions on which company to go for - or keep away from. Thanks Re: Bathroom reno companies, Melbourne 2Apr 10, 2009 4:55 pm I don't have a recommendation for you Rosie, but we renovated a bathroom a few years back and just employed a local handyman/carpenter/plasterer plus a tiler and plumber. We sourced our own fittings and tiles, and got the handyman guy to rip out the old fittings, demolish a wall and install new gyprock and cornices etc. We saved $$ by not moving the location of the fittings, so no drains or taps had to be relocated - except the vanity by a few cms, and that was just a matter of using that flexible steel hose for hot & cold water and putting a couple of extra 90-degree bends in the waste, so no big deal. The new vanity, toilet and taps etc got plumbed, the tiler came in and did his thing, and I did the painting myself. We had a new mirrored shaving cabinet door and new shower screen made up by a wardrobe/shower screen company, and my husband installed the towel rails. We did have to relocate a power point and light switch too - luckily we have an electrician friend. If you can source the right people, and plan to do some of the work yourself, it should work out cheaper than having a reno company manage the whole thing. It's worth investigating anyway. Re: Bathroom reno companies, Melbourne 3Apr 10, 2009 7:21 pm We had our old bathroom pulled out and a new one put in and used a builder who coordinated other suppliers as required. I thought it would be expensive but it was reasonable. I chose all my own fittings etc and managed to save some money by shopping around.
