Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 06, 2009 1:43 pm We are undergoing quite a large renovation to our home. We are still waiting for our stuff to come back from the certifiers so the builders started in our bathroom as there is no structural change there.
Last Wednesday it was time for the tiling. The guy arrived in the morning and did all of the wall tiles and the feature, he also grouted the same day. Thursday he laid and grouted the floor tiles, as well as the hob. I am not at all happy with the job that has been done. My concerns are * There are tiles on the floor that are uneven - one side sits higher than the other, the tiles don't meet at the same height across the floor. I can feel it with my feet as I walk across. * the grout on the floor is not an even colour - it changes from dark to light in many patches - it is particularly bad in the shower area. * I feel that not all of the spacing between the floor tiles are even, and the grout is different depths. * I know that the spacing between the wal tiles is not even and not all corners meet evenly * Some of the wall tiles pertrude more than others * the tiling on the hob is not even either and at night the beading casts a shadow over the tile. I guess I want to know if these concerns are valid? They are to my husband and I but I want to have the confidence when our building supervisor arrives in an hour (I know I should have done this post sooner). Should I expect perfection with the spacing (I assume he used spacers as there are sme left in the bathroom), and the consistency of grout colour. Should he have laid and grouted on the same (very wet and rainy) day? Any advice would be great, I will try and get some photos to show what I mean. Andrea Re: Not happy with the tiling job 2Apr 06, 2009 1:54 pm Andrea, your concerns are absolutely valid!!! We had 3 tiles in opur ensuite that didn't sound as though they had enough glue under them, and when we pointed it out to our SS, he didn't hesitate to have them pulled up. Unevenness, tiles not matching up, etc is UNacceptable! Our tiles were not grouted on the same day, but we had quite a bit done, so they didn't have ime, but, I would have thought that they should let the glue dry at least o/night, regardless! Good luck - definitely raise your concerns with the SS, though! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 3Apr 06, 2009 2:09 pm Thanks Petal. Our building supervisor told to expect the best, he has already seen the job with my husband on Friday but I am not happy with the result - he thinks replacing two tiles will fix the problem. I think there would be more than that. I am going to try and be strong and not settle for second best, we are spending a lot of money on this renovation and I don't want to start with a bathroom with grout that looks stained and old. Andrea Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 4Apr 06, 2009 2:10 pm That different coloured grout would also really peeve me as I would constantly be thinking its dirty 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' We had very light grey grout in the previous tiling and it didn't take long for it all to look dirty - understandably. I dont want that same look, I want it to look beautiful and new. Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 6Apr 06, 2009 6:52 pm Oh you poor thing, i definately wouldn't be happy with whats displayed in those pictures. I would definately be complaining and expecting something to be done regarding it. Good luck! Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 10Apr 06, 2009 7:51 pm Judie I would be asking (well, demanding actually) that the tiling be re-done. Completely. That is a shocking tiling job. Judie i agree, get it re-done. They arent even difficult tiles to lay. they are standard flat flush tiles. They shouldnt look like that. As for the grout. i completely see what you mean in the photo. Looks as though they have used two different types of grout. Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! Now tackling the HUGE task of the Garden- viewtopic.php?f=31&t=14782 Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 11Apr 06, 2009 8:43 pm Thanks so much for all of the support and replies. The building supervisor said that the more he looked at it the worse it was. He completely agreed with me and the entire floor will be lifted and relaid and regrouted. The top of the hob will also be pulled out and redone. He seemed to skirt around the issue of the wall tiles, example in the second photo. He didn't give me a clear answer on that so I will clarify that with him via phone. I also thought I would question the tiler about when he was here. The BS said that the same tiler had just done a marble bathroom for them that was absolutley perfect so he was very suprised. I would like the wall tiles fixed aswell, although I am thinking that this would involve resheeting the walls again. I will talk to the BS about it and make our decision from there. What do you think about that. They are white tiles with white grout so it doesn't stand out badly but to me it is the principle of it and the fact I will see it everytime. Thanks again, Andrea Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 12Apr 06, 2009 10:10 pm Andrea, Sorry to hear about your experiences you are paying for quality an by those photos, that isn't quality.. if that was one of my jobs, the tiler would be there ripping it out straight away.. big no no to me.. as you have been told an as you said; it's been sorted.. I will say it again.. You have every right to question on the quality of the tiling, an demand for it to be fixed, which means re-done, doesn't look professional or to high quality work standards.. You say they are ripping up the tiles to be re-done for the floor?? Be sure to check an see what they do once it's all up (seen it all in action) they will most likely chip up your bed they had put down on top of the waterproofing.. ask for the holes to be patched before it gets re-tiled.. as I could imagine they could be quite large holes!! If they end up taking few tiles off the wall.. make sure they don't damage the waterproofing.. unlike the floor, the waterproofing is protected from the bed.. The walls only have the tile, the glue then the waterproofing.. Also on another note.. put 900mm level inside the shower recess.. see if there is fall.. better to check now before they rip it up, so you can bring that up also if there is no fall to the drain hole Cheers Mano Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 13Apr 07, 2009 4:47 pm Hi Andrea Sorry to hear what has happened as you know the Tiler is at fault the grout as you said is un even this will give you a different look in the grout joint and it looks like the thinset (tile glue) has leaked up the joint during the laying of tiles and has now contaminated the grout this is why we grout the next day and clean our joints before the thinset cures, we never grout a floor the same day. Also it looks like spacers were not used on the floor as the pic shows in the cross roads, the difference in height is due to bad floor preparation it is the norm with man made tiles unless you pay extra to have the floor flat as possible by grinding or using a leveling compound to raise other areas this is always done before laying natural stone tiles like marble or travertine. In saying that I would have them ripped up and re done by a different tiler tell them your concerns before they lay. Goodluck and hang in there. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 15Apr 07, 2009 8:01 pm Thanks so much again. The more I loo at the wall tiles, the more unhappy I am with those too. I figure if we are going to the trouble of replacing the floor I will never be happy with the imperfect wall tiles. The more I look, the more I find. Quote: Do you mean that the waterproofing needs to be replaced in places where it's been damaged ? I would like to know this also. Quote: In saying that I would have them ripped up and re done by a different tiler tell them your concerns before they lay This is what I am going to ask ethe BS tomorrow. My friend's brother is a tiler (and a very good one!) so we were hoping to get him to do it, I really don't want the same person to do it again. I am just curious as to how this works out with payment as we are paying the building company for the work. My friend's husband is a builder and was here today and was absolutely disgusted in the job, he found more things that we hadn't even noticed. He is building a house at the moment and I know how fussy he is. Quote: Also it looks like spacers were not used on the floor as the pic shows in the cross roads, the difference in height is due to bad floor preparation The tiler bedded the floor himself the day before he did the tiles. I have not heard anything from the BS today. I think I am getting the courage to demand the entire thing to be pulled out and started again. What a complete waste of money, time and resources. I am also annoyed that he used our bin to dump everything and it was our grass clipping bin, not our rubbish bin, now we can't move it. He also used our mop, didn't empty the bucket and when I did it was full of grout and my mop head ruined. I definitely don't want someone like that back in to do the job again. Thanks for listening to my rant! Andrea Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 16Apr 09, 2009 1:45 pm Ok so we have permission to replace the entire bathroom, our BS (building supervisor) was very supportive and totally understodd why we would want it redone. Yesterday we had my friend's brother out who was pretty keen for us to let the guy come back and have another go, fix the major problems. Whereas this would be the easiest solution for now in terms of getting it doen quickly, I still don't think I will be happy with the result. There will still be grout lines that vary too much and cross roads that are way out. I am about to call the BS now to discuss how it will all happen. my friend's brother said the BSA would take one look at it and say rip it out - that was enough for me - it is just the inconvieniece of having no bath or shower for at least another 2 weeks. Will see how it goes, Andrea Re: Not happy with the tiling job - UPDATED WITH PICTURES 17Apr 09, 2009 9:49 pm Andrea - sorry to hear of your plight. A mistake is one thing but poor workmanship is not on. Also it is one thing to borrow someone elses stuff, but to return it in less condition than how it was borrowed is sinful. The builder (BS) will empty the bin and replace the mop head if you ask. Since he is ( I assume ) the head contractor and had subbied the tiling out. The BS carries the can ,and will present the tiler with a kick in the bum. The builder should find out why they did such a crap job. Where you are coming from is where you are going to...
