Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 28, 2009 1:54 pm Just wondering if many people are doing this and if you are happy with it? Would it make the bottles kept in there go mouldy ? For some reason I keep thinking that it would trap in the moisture but I could be wrong... Also, how much extra would this cost, for a newly built house (not renovating)? Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 2Mar 28, 2009 2:06 pm Do you mean a 'niche' ? If so , yes,we have them in all 5 ensuites, and they're fantastic - so glad we did that! No, the bottles don't go mouldy at all, I'm very happy to report! They're really easy for the kids, too. They're not cheap - I think they were $200 +.... (built with PD, signed in '07) but I could be remembering wrong! They are more work b/c they have to be framed , and they're more fiddly to tile, too. Worth it, though, if you can do it! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 3Mar 28, 2009 2:34 pm I havent lived with one yet, but i wouldnt imagine that it would get mouldy as the niche usually arent deep enough to trap moisture and its all tiled up. My builder is quoting $200 per niche, but it's not that big, only 300mm h x 400mm w x 90mm deep. I think they are well worth the money! Makes the shower look awesome without having to hang those racks on the shower head. Def a must if you can afford the luxury! They usually build them on a sloping angle of a degree or two so that the water drains off them which helps the moisture not build up there. Ours were about the same cost as petal's from memory. I have also seen them done above the bath, a long one running the length of the bath, perfect for candles and stuff "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I don't mean to be nasty or anything but surelly you dont think that someone who can afford to have 5 bathrooms cant afford a cleaner (if they choose to) Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 9Mar 29, 2009 1:04 am i liked the idea of space for the bottles, if its too exxy you can always get mounted dispensers? saw them in a 5star hotel once and now they are on the buylist! 2nd-Fix | Blog Building with Desyn Homes previously with the insolvent Endeavour Homes Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 10Mar 29, 2009 9:24 am It's not always possible to have a built-in niche. It's one thing I'm still peeved about, because I really wanted them. Unfortunately, our showers are positioned against exterior walls and niches can only be done on internal walls. Can't stand tile soap dishes, and I hate those hanging things that dangle from the shower arm - they look messy and always go rusty. And bottles on the floor - ugh! We're going with glass shelves as a compromise, but they're going to cost almost as much as the niches because I'm fussy. This is a simple one, but things would probably slide off it: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This one has a spot for soap, and at a price of $175, I'm still trying to persuade my husband (after three months) that we need it: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 11Mar 29, 2009 9:54 am gettingThere themax Petal, Did you say FIVE ensuites ? Our builder chucked them in for free, I love my builder! We were prepared to pay a few hundred for them though if we had to as I reckon will be worth it, much cleaner/more modern looking than one of those shower buddys coming off the shower arm IMO. We too are kind of maxing out our budget on the house and we'd much rather put all extra $$$ towards the repayments than paying cleaners. But if there is ever a need, and we can afford it, I wouldnt say no to it Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 17Mar 29, 2009 10:20 pm When you guys say the builder charged you $200 per niche, that was through a building company, right? I am wondering if it would be any cheaper for us since we are conctracting out all the tradespeople ourselves... Hmmm. Do niches have to be done during the steel frame stage, or gypbrok .... or tiling? Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 18Mar 29, 2009 10:26 pm First, no, it's not hell to clean - they're quite easy, actually! I have four children - what do I need a cleaner for????????? Yes, we built with PD, but donuts built with a smaller builder. Niches are framed at frame stage, not afterwards.
