Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 21Mar 30, 2009 8:33 am I'm on my own here. I didn't want niches. They look great. But they can leak. And if they do, there can be pretty big problems. Wasn't worth the potential trouble to me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 23Mar 30, 2009 11:48 am But then again, I guess ANYTHING would leak if not done properly. Just like roofs aren't supposed to leak but sometimes they do... And how bathrooms on the second floor sometimes leak and flood the ground floor Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 24Mar 30, 2009 11:54 am ICK Joles, leaky? What the? Wouldn't they be waterproofed? What are you doing to me Jo?! Every sales consultant I've ever spoken to from every company has told me they have had at least one client it has happened to. My first sales consultant talked me out of them as he'd. It won't happen to everyone but it may happen to some and it's something you won't know is happening until there are big problems, and perhaps I'm paranoid but I'm trying to minimise potential problems.... cos I'm just tired of problems. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 25Mar 30, 2009 12:14 pm Bugger! Well fingers crossed we don't have that issue! I know what you mean though about minimizing problems!! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 26Mar 30, 2009 7:25 pm SuH I wouldn't assume, just because of the size of a person's house, they could afford a cleaner in our case there won't be much money left for cleaners, I have decided not to let anyone do anything in the house, that includes showering or eating, nothing that can cause mess I say EXACTLY the same thing, Su....I tell my kids they have to eat outdoors, pee outdoors and when they get dirty, they can use the hose in the back yard to clean up. My husband thinks I'm kidding. Donuts One of our niches is on an external wall!!! oh dear my bathroom really is going to fall down isn't it Donuts, I think it's only because of the restriction on depth - with an internal wall, you can have a whole 90mm, less one sheet of gyprock (and tiling). With an exterior wall, you get bricks and supporting thingies in the way and....um. ....I really have no idea. LOL. It's just what we were told by the builder. I doubt that you'll have any problems. I'm still annoyed. Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 27Mar 30, 2009 8:05 pm kek I doubt that you'll have any problems. Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 31Mar 30, 2009 8:24 pm The chick who did my tiles appointment told me that they can't do on external walls but my builder didn't 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' So, if some builders do it and others don't, I wonder what the alleged problem is? Maybe I'll ask next time I go past the displays.... Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 34Mar 31, 2009 8:11 am SuH Don't worry donuts, I reckon they are all wrong they're just having a lend of us and I would like to put the praying emoticon here but "it" won't let me yeah that sounds good to me SuH "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 35Mar 31, 2009 9:04 am Hi, I was told you need extra thickness in the wall, so if there was a window on the same wall it would be the incorrect thickness for the window to fit also. We solved the problem by creating a small step out, like a tiled shelf which is the entire length of the shower at about 1400mm high...IYKWIM??!!! Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 36Mar 31, 2009 1:04 pm joles I'm on my own here. I didn't want niches. They look great. But they can leak. And if they do, there can be pretty big problems. Wasn't worth the potential trouble to me. I'm with you Joles. We've dealt with the consequences of a leaking shower and, though I love the look, those niches are just one more thing that need to be done just right. We've had enough trouble with the screw-in shelf the builder installed. It looks straight enough but he obviously didn't use a spirit level so it drains away from the drainage hole instead of towards it. Funny, we had a shaving cabinet built into the wall cavity in our old house. On an external wall. Hmm. Re: Inbuilt shelf in the shower area 38Mar 31, 2009 7:22 pm Clutching at straws here but I did ask my tiler today, he hasn't heard of anything about the external niche thing before and said as long as it's sealed adequately there shouldn't be a problem, must admit he is only about 28yo, but a very knowledgable 28yo still trying to put praying emoticon in but he ain't workin WHY?????
