Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 24, 2009 2:04 pm Hi. We have an awning window inside the shower area in the ensuite. At first it will be tiled all around to prevent damage. But the builder said there will be a problem with the awning lever/handle if they put in tiles. Aside from that, the cost to tile around (with water proofing) will be around $500.
Any suggestions? The window is shoulder height so it is bound to get wet. I don't know the window but assume it has no transom, that it is operated by a chainwinder, and that the chainwinder is fitted to the bottom reveal, or to the plaster onto which the tiles are fastened? Is this correct? The chainwinder can be removed during tiling and replaced after tiling, either with screws through the tiles or with silicone directly onto the tiles You may need to adjust the screw location on the sash so it may be better if the chainwinder is fitted after the tiling. I would recommend an upgrade to a winder with a stainless steel chain. But even if the tiler removes the chainwinder before installing the tiles, the handle wont have enough space to move to open/close the window after the tiles are placed. The builder is saying that the best option now is to just put in the normal architraves and then paint it with a wood water-proofing sealer. But is there such a thing? Thanks. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Awning window inside shower... 4Feb 24, 2009 5:14 pm dembi_2000 Hi Ed. You are correct, there is no transom and it has a chainwinder at the bottom. I am not sure why the winder won't operate on top of the reveals and the tiles. But they can remove the bottom reveal, fit cement sheet and have the tilers tile into the reveal area. That's normal. Basically, I think the waterproof plasterboard + waterproofing compound + tiles will be too high already. And that would obstruct the turning of the window lever. I did some research and found the Bondall Multi-surface waterproofer to waterproof the wood/architrave around the window. Not sure if this is a good product (and a good idea to fix the issue). \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Awning window inside shower... 6Feb 24, 2009 6:41 pm dembi_2000 I'll try to post a pic when i get the chance to take a picture. Your builder should put some bracing under the window to support the sill.
