Buying a house that has a bath... and NO shower.
Do I
a) put in a shower over the bath with a glass screen?
b) remove the bath and put in a new corner shower?
Thanks lovelies.

Keep the bath if you have kidlets or intend to have them in the future...otherwise ditch it. Re: to bath or not to bath... 4Jan 20, 2009 8:27 pm To families with little kids it could be an issue, in fact it could make them look elsewhere as it is a basic function required daily.
Depends on who your intended market is at selling time. Re: to bath or not to bath... 5Jan 21, 2009 10:50 am I'd keep it. Even if its just for myself I love indulging in a hot bath!! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: to bath or not to bath... 6Jan 21, 2009 11:24 am We have a horrible shower over bath and we will be ripping it out and putting in a shower cubicle.
If you have a look for my posts you will see the thread about it. We do not have children and intend to stay here for a long while once all the renovations are done!! I absolutely HATE shower over bath!! If you choke a smurf... what colour do they turn? Re: to bath or not to bath... 9Jan 21, 2009 3:31 pm If it's just for yourself and have no kids, then get rid of bath and have a nice shower cubicle there.
But, if you are thinking about re-sale, and it sounds like you are, I think you would be seriously limiting your market especially if the house has 3+ bedrooms and would otherwise appeal to a family market. Our last house had shower over bath; it wasn't ideal for the showerer, but we wouldn't have even considered it if it had no bath. End of story. It's a deal-breaker when you have kids. If it has 2 bedrooms or less, then it may not appeal to families anyway so you could rip the bath out without as much consequence resale-wise. Re: to bath or not to bath... 10Jan 21, 2009 4:42 pm MissMuffitt I absolutely HATE shower over bath!! Me four. They are hateful, horrible, ugly cheap-a-s-s bits of tat. Doesn't matter how they're configured or what fancy "tapware" you dress 'em with, they're always awful. Even as parent with small children I'd consider ripping out a bath-shower combo and just placing a plastic tub in the shower recess whenever the baby needed a bath. That's how much I hate those combos. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: to bath or not to bath... 11Jan 21, 2009 5:38 pm I don't think they're that bad - we had one in our old house for many years until we renovated the bathroom, not ideal but IMO its better to have a shower and a bath, especially if it is a family size house, and if this is the only way to do it due to space restraints then so be it.
However I presume it is a full size bath at present. have you the space to do a separate shower and a small 'half size' bath - that may be a compromise so you have a separate shower but still a small bath that young children can use. Re: to bath or not to bath... 12Jan 21, 2009 5:44 pm I hated bath over shower combos.....
Until I saw this really nice one at this fancy hotel we were staying it. It was half open with a glass screen and no crappy curtain, and all white with these massive white tiles. It actually looked good! I was so surprised. Nice taps, the works. So I guess anything can be pulled off if it's done right.... Re: to bath or not to bath... 13Jan 21, 2009 7:27 pm I'm another loather of shower-over-bath combos. But if you are renovating for re-sale, would keep the bath.
We put a bath in our current home's main bathroom (also have an ensuite) & the only time the bath has been used is when my 23 yo DS wants to soak his weary weary muscles Re: to bath or not to bath... 14Jan 25, 2009 11:57 am just be careful thought if you plan to sell in the future if your market is family with small childern and you get rid of the bath you will no longer get those buyers to look at your home they will go elsewhere finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: to bath or not to bath... 15Jan 25, 2009 12:03 pm Instead of a standard bath under the shower what about ripping it out and creating a tiled bath. That way it has a nice flat floor surface like a shower but it can still be used as a bath. Years ago a family friend had a big square , completely tiled roman style bath. It had a flat base. I don't see why you couldn't do a rectangular one and have an over head shower arrangement like a standard bath-shower. You could also go for a hand held type shower. This might make the arrangement seem more luxurious.
I've googled but couldn't come up with anything quite the same. But here's 3 pics anyway that i did find. I have recently (last night) found a bathroom design that is absolutely perfect for the space we have in our new ensuite. I can't for the life of me find the picture again, but I'll try and explain it... Bath at one end of the bathroom with a "wet room" or "walk in" shower next to it. So basically, it's the bath, then the shower tiles and just 1 glass screen between the shower and the vanity. You can get away with having a slightly smaller area for the shower without it feeling cramped, because it's just one side to the shower. Our ensuite is 1.8 x 3.4. The toilet will have the cistern set into the vanity and we're hoping to be able to have the vanity go on two walls to increase the space so hubby & I can easily use the bathroom together. This is what I have done up for ours so far - sorry it's pretty crapy, but I like to use Excel when fidling around with layouts. So I'm looking forward to finally having my soak in the tub when the house is done.
For resale sake as much as I loathe the shower in bath thing I would probably do it and put up with it. I have kids, but they're 4 & 6 now so easy enough to shower (and quicker too) but sometimes it would still be nice if I could throw them in the tub for half an hour or so (really get that dirt off!). Anyway maybe consider a shower with a tiled recess (I don't know if that's the right word), like a normal shower except it has a tiled surround say about 400mm deep, as long as the drain can be plugged up then families could still use it to bathe little kids. Kind of like those plastic shower units you can get, but just nicer looking I guess). And if you must have just a shower, make sure it's a big one! This is what I had to do in one rental without a bath.... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's a good example of the "recessed" I'm talking about, only problem is that we couldn't plug the drain. Lol, as they grew they graduated to bigger containers Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Oh ok looks like the idea did work, but probably wasn't deep enough (and thus warm enough) in the winter time. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ A unit we lived in had a shower over bath set up, and I must say I don't think I minded putting up with it for the benefit and convenience of bathing the kids... They could even have a shower head that has a hand shower and thus could even be used sitting down on the tile "bath" base. Re: to bath or not to bath... 20Feb 02, 2009 10:10 am Pebble how funny - we are having the exact debate at the moment - to shower over bath or to just shower in our bathroom reno. We were discussing people using plastic tubs to bath their kids and then here you are with your photos doing exactly that! I must admit it seems like it works but isn't really ideal.
Our personal taste would be to just go with a shower as we can tile straight through and our small bathroom would look bigger, but considering rental value and resale...... I guess we just have to make a choice and if we decide to go with the shower only we just lose that part of the market with young kids. Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included. My hesitation… 0 22702 2 3387 2 4467 |
