Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 20, 2009 2:59 pm We currently have an outdoor laundry and will be bringing it inside as part of our renos.... which do you think is the best idea to incorporate it into? The bathroom (small bathroom which will mean not much storage space left for towels etc), in the hallway 'unit style' with doors to hide (more room for say ironing board storage and tub etc), or 'euro' style in the kitchen somehow? I am leaning towards hallway but would appreciate thoughts based on personal opinion and/or experience! Re: Laundry location - bathroom, hall, kitchen? 3Jan 20, 2009 3:28 pm All depends on the location of other rooms in your house. Re: Laundry location - bathroom, hall, kitchen? 4Jan 20, 2009 3:40 pm Once renos are done you will walk into open plan lounge/kitchen/dining on entrance to the house, then you walk down the hallway to get to bedrooms and bathroom (3 bed 1 bath house). The hallway runs past the side of the bathroom and the bedrooms feed off the hallway also - sorry I have no drawing - hope this helps? Re: Laundry location - bathroom, hall, kitchen? 5Jan 20, 2009 3:55 pm No way in the kitchen. Especially with open plan.
Bathrooms not bad, so long as you dont lose too much space. Myself, I love big bathrooms and wouldnt want to sacrifice the space. I would go the closet style one so long as it is not going to send noise all through the house. Re: Laundry location - bathroom, hall, kitchen? 6Jan 20, 2009 4:15 pm I grew up in the UK where there were no laundries so having the machine in your kitchen was the norm. Sure I wouldn't put a top loader in there as I'd loose bench space but a front loader under the bench wouldn't be an issue for me if I was tight on space.
To me however the real issue is the paraphernalia that goes along with doing the laundry that usually live in the laundry. Things like pegs, ironing boards, detergents, washing baskets, linen etc. Have a look at your laundry and figure out where your going to be putting everything without a laundry. If you can't find a suitable existing home for them now then you need to take that into account - thus the hallway / cupboard scenario is perhaos the best. However if your facidiously neat and can find homes for everything then a discreet 3ft square in the kitchen isn't an issue. Especially if you have a wide hallway.
You could have cupboard doors, sliding doors or bi-folds (these always look nice ). My sister has cupboards within the hallway laundry and a benchtop for folding (mind you it always has stuff on it). I will definitely look into this when I build a house. No loss of available space in the bathroom is a big benefit. I wouldn't even consider the kitchen for a second.
Slightly off topic, but is the kitchen laundry the reason why English people (on TV shows anyway) always seem to wash their dishes in a plastic tub within the sink? Because they use their sink as a laundry tub and don't want contamination???? Because they use their sink as a laundry tub and don't want contamination???? No - they have normal sinks (maybe a tad deeper as theres a lot of older style ones), very few english houses would have a laundry tub - even ones with a laundry area. The plastic tub idea is still in use but I believe it stems from wanting to protect silver, glass and crockery from banging against the stainless steel of the sink. Also the dishwater is used to water the plants, in particular for watering the planter box. We will have washing machine on bottom, dryer space on top and slimline sink next to it- but with bifold doors. I actually miss it!! it was so easy to do the washing and never was a mess like my laundry becomes. i found I did wash loads more often and you never forgot about the clothes in the washing machine!! This is what I'm doing for my new house. I've got 2 metres worth of cupboards that just extend the kitchen cupboards. When the doors are all closed, it will just look like a lot of kitchen cupboards. The first 600 mm is a cupboard with some hanging rails in it. This will be the drying room. Our washing machine spin dries the clothing so well, that just hanging up shirts and the like inside for a few hours dries them. It's also easier to iron them than putting them in a dryer (and much more convenient than using a clothes line). The next 1400 mm will be double bifold doors which will contin the laundry tub and then washing machine with dryer above it. Must admit, I haven't thought about where to store the pegs, ironing board and washing basket. Looks like a revision is coming up.
