Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 07, 2009 10:26 pm If I go with procalin tiles on the floor will these show smears and marks more easily and when you mop will they show up mop smears and would I have to buff them after. or if you walk on them bare foot would they show up foot prints. ( I am very pedantic about this sort of thing and dont want to be spending all my time buffing off smears) lol.
Also I dont know why but in my shower my tiles get a pink tinge to them from a build up of shampoo, Hubby says god knows what Im putting on my hair lol. With normal tiles this washes off easy, but with porcelling tiles on the walls would the stains get absorbed. Just dont know what way to go. I love the look of the shiny tiles, but then Im thinking they may look best with all the top finishes ie stone bench tops glossy cupboards and if thats the case I reckon that will be out of my price range. If anyone can help I would be much appreaciated. Thanks. Re: Porcalin tiles 2Jan 07, 2009 11:31 pm Get a sample tile of the one you would like to use. I have scratched my porcelain tiles with a key, poured on undiluted bleach, red wine, beetroot juice, and anything else I thought could stain them. All of these have left no marks at all on my polished porcelain.
The polished tiles could be very slippery on the floor, however rectified porcelain tiles (which allow for a smaller grout joint) would be good in the shower and on the walls, especially if you seal the grout. My wall tiles were $63m2 for 600 x 300 polished porcelain tiles, and I'm having them adjacent to squareform laminex (not a glossy benchtop) and they go fine. Matrix Re: Porcalin tiles 3Jan 08, 2009 7:14 am Thanks Matrix.
I am going to look at tiles today and will try the scratch test. I was also thinking about squareform, or something similar that I can get without any extra cost. I thought something like laminex limestone an Ivory colour the same sort of tone as the floor and then introduce colour with the towels etc. Ive also seen now that some people are carrying the large floor tiles up the wall. I suppose this would save having to make another decision lol. I just didnt know if the porcelin tiles were porus or not. Re: Porcalin tiles 6Jan 08, 2009 9:14 am borg How about perpanately sealed porcelin. ie glazed porcelin. Usually with matt finish. interested to know this as well! My situation is this: category 1 tiles from the builder is ceramic tiles while the upgrade is glazed porcelain. wondering if it's worth an upgrade. But the cleaning issue is definitely my concern. Re: Porcalin tiles 7Jan 08, 2009 9:22 am The pink tinge is most likely mould. I always had a problem with this in my kids' shower in our old house - it seems to feed off soap and shampoo residue. I don't have any problems in our new place, because we chose a dark coloured tile...
I hate smeary marks too, but I always dry my floor tiles with an old towel after mopping (I just kind of walk around on it). For the showers, I use a good quality squeegee on tiles and glass and they come up a treat. MIne aren't porcelain, but a squeegee works even better on glossy surfaces. Re: Porcalin tiles 8Jan 09, 2009 8:25 am (glazed) porcelain tiles are category 2 tiles in PD's house, whereas ceramic tiles are category. Correct me if I am wrong that porcelain tiles are better than ceramic tiles. .? Re: Porcalin tiles 9Jan 09, 2009 8:33 am We have both polished and unpolished porcelain tiles and I love them both. I think the smearing depends on the colour - our lighter ones def show marks quicker than the darker ones.
Mango lover, we built with PD and they never actually gave us categories for the tiles, just showed us "standard" v "upgrade", and then the upgrade to the upgrade, etc!!!! They seemed to get more exi as you went along the wall!!! I was thinking of light ones, but have to reconsider it as you said the marks thing. Re: Porcalin tiles 11Jan 09, 2009 8:47 am Oh, okay.............I'm guessing all of ours were Cat 5, then............
Oh, except the butler's pantry - that one was Cat 1!!!!!!!!! Our ensuite is a polished porcelain tile (600 x 600) that looks a bit like caesar stone - it has flecks though it. Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Porcalin tiles 12Jan 09, 2009 7:45 pm We are also having porcelain tiles in all wet areas and ground floor (entry, dining, family and kitchen).
I love the look of those shiny porcelain tiles especially the 600x600! As for the cleaning, my experience so far is, footprints would be visible if you step on it while wet. After it dries up, there's no smear at all. PRobably it's because it's dark-coloured and has flecks on it. If it was plain, probably the smear would be visible. Our ground floor tile is lighter in colour (beige/olive green/brown shades) and currently being laid. So can't commnt on the smear issue yet. Also, I think it also depends on the quality of the porcelain tiles. I noticed that there are cheaper ones (costing around $30-$50/sqm and more expensive ones $50+/sqm). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! I was thinking of 600x600 in the whole house, even in bath toilet laundry and ensuite, then go up the wall in 600x300. (tile shop even suggested 600x600 up the walls). I will be having a hob for the bath with tiles around and will finish with a chrome cap. Do the 600x600 look too big in these small areas or do they look good? Have you any photos as it sounds nice! How hard are they to keep clean. I am going for a light ivory colour if I have them. When the sunlight comes in do you see a lot of smears from day to day living, as I dont want to be buffing them up every 5 mins. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Porcalin tiles 17Jan 15, 2009 8:16 am Taffy, I'm not being smart, but in the last few days, you've basically asked the same questions in about 5 different threads.
People are really patient and helpful on here, but you are just wasting people's time, the answers are not going to change. There's this thread than there's all of these below..... all of them asking about colours or porcelain tiles. You are asking colour questions and asking for opinions based on the tile you're using... then starting threads asking which tile to use. You have asked in I don't know how many threads about porcelain tiles.... and people have taken the time to respond.... to a question you've already asked the day before. There is a heap of information about porcealain tiles on here. Try the search button. People are happy to help.... but this seems really strange. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ight=tiles https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ight=tiles https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ight=tiles https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ight=tiles https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ight=tiles https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... ight=tiles I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Porcalin tiles 18Jan 15, 2009 5:04 pm The reason for so many threads is because I didnt even know these polish tiles existed until recently.
Builders have only just started to put them in their display homes now where I live. I had a bit of a surprise when I went into a tile shop and they started bombarding me with questions about what sort of tile I wanted. Then I started panicking as I thought I have to make a decision for my builder now, and I had to get as much information as quickly as possible., Then when I read posts on here I got totaly confused about these tiles. As It turns out I have a bit more time to think about it. so I wont ask anymore, Ill work it out in my own sweet time. I am new here and I thought rather than long post asking loads of questions that I had to break it down into headings for each area. Then people would respond to the area they feel they could help in. I thought this would work so people didnt have to help with colours if their speciality was in the laying and technical areas of the tiles. I wouldnt class this as wasting peoples time. in fact the opposite. If people dont want to read my thread as the heading doesnt interest them then they dont need too. That goes for you too you dont have to read them if your opinion is oh now her she goes again then you dont have to read it.
