Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Dec 12, 2008 8:56 am time for us to re-do bathroom, and hoping for some tips/suggestions.
We don't plan on living in this house forever, so have been trying to just make it more appealing for when the time comes to sell. Ive attached a (rough) plan of our existing bathroom, on our 1940/50's delight! just picture all shades of brown/bronze&gold, and that would be this! (actually i'll try add a pic) Im fairly sure it has, at some point been, tiled over tiles, as the tiles seem excessively thick? (30mm) the shower is over bath and is fully enclosed with sliders, only thing is the previous owner must have been a midget as we have to duck everytime we get in the toilet is also in the bathroom, and theres no way we can make any room from surrounding rooms, to change this. Im hoping we can somehow seperate the shower and bath? (only reason for keeping a bath is we have young children) is it possible? At this stage it is the only bathroom and toilet in the house, however our 'old & just as dated' laundry is bigger than the bathroom, so were thinking that when the time comes to renovate that, we should be able to add another shower& toilet in there. sorry for long post, just trying to give enough info!! and I'd really appreciate any suggestions for a fairly economical solution Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Bathroom makeover, 50yrs overdue! 2Dec 12, 2008 9:28 am If you are happy to have a small 1200mm bath, I think this layout would work well Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! You could fit a 1200 x 1200 bath in corner where the vanity is and move the toilet slightly towards the bottom wall. Then you could have a 900 shower in the corner where the bath is and still fit a 500 vanity inbetween. Re: Bathroom makeover, 50yrs overdue! 4Dec 12, 2008 9:35 am haha Lostris, that's pretty much what I was imagining, except I'd do 1200 x 1200 corner bath and have a smallish vanity. You could continue the vanit mirror right across the bath to make the room appear bigger. Re: Bathroom makeover, 50yrs overdue! 5Dec 12, 2008 10:46 am Corner baths take up way too much space for little benefit though. Being the only bathroom in the house they would use the vanity much more than the bath, so its not ideal to make the vanity smaller.
In this space, if you had a 1200 corner bath, and a 900 shower, you would only have 500mm left for vanity. Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! come to think of it, Hubby is not the smallest bloke so not sure, would he be comfy in 900x900? , so maybe we'll have to update the shower over bath setup? ive noticed there are some now that are like a P shape? also sorry, im not sure if I have the door in the right position on my plan? it is on the same wall as the shower head (the rhs wall of my plan) and opens back to the other wall.... if that made sense!? would it be better to rehang the door so that it opens back towards the shower unit? thanks for the ideas so far though! this site is fantastic! Re: Bathroom makeover, 50yrs overdue! 7Dec 12, 2008 1:01 pm Have the door opening up against the wall, if it opens against the shower it will visually block half the space and make it look smaller.
If you were to keep the shower over the bath, look at a bath like the Decina Modena, it is quite wide so you have a more comfortable showering area. Then just put a bath screen on it so it doesn't enclose the bath and make it feel cramped. Also, use lots of light tones as it will help make the space bigger. Ive just been sitting in the bathroom, and I really cant see the liklihood of having the shower bigger than 900. I think the best bet is to just replace everything as it is/where it is? and like you suggested, a fresh lot of tiles paint etc. in white's...
would a feature strip around the room make it look smaller, or just stick with white? im just not sure of what would work the room the best.... a large mirror somewhere? and with the 30mm tiles currently on wall, is that normal, or is it likely its 2 sets of tiling? lastly, this may sound silly, but is the floor meant to be level, or is it suppose to slope down to the drainhole ? Re: Bathroom makeover, 50yrs overdue! 10Dec 12, 2008 10:27 pm as long as it could slide into the wall cavity behind the shower, it could be a possibility. the toilet privacy factor is one of my issues now, funny you mention that! my 3yo has a habit of flying in when im consulting the royals or in the shower, and both are in the limelight!
