Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 14, 2008 6:52 pm Hi Guys,
We're looking at building soon, and love the walk in shower idea, but am unsure of how they perform? And what dimensions/design we should go with? If anybody has any suggestions/recommendations/feedback on their own shower design it would be greatly appreciated... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 3Oct 14, 2008 11:47 pm donuts what is the difference between a walk in shower and a normal shower? Don't know about anyone else, but I'll be walking into mine! A walk in shower is basically a shower without a door and usually they are a floor level shower. I like floor level showers and wouldnt go any other way but I dont like the idea of no door because when showering you can feel the cold breeze coming through. Here are some pics of a few different types of walk in showers so everyone can see exactly what they are - Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 4Oct 15, 2008 10:31 am I_BUILD I like floor level showers and wouldnt go any other way but I dont like the idea of no door because when showering you can feel the cold breeze coming through. what if you had ducted heating on? or one of those heat lamp/lights on? Those pics are not quite what I would want in a walk in shower. My ideal walk in has NO glass and is long enough to have the water contained in the shower area. You can also have them stepping slightly down so the water is contained. Here are some pics ( I had a hard time finding many) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Paula Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 6Oct 15, 2008 12:10 pm HI we looked into this idea and because it was to go on our second storey we couldn't do it without great cost. The floor waste sits underneath obviously and the hob of a shower is put in so the difference in height of your shower level and your floor level don't look so obvious. So you have to make that part of the slab deeper to accomodate this waste space and thats hard to do on a 2nd storey slab. I don't have any information on a single storey but I assume it would be similar.
I don't know if this is the sort of info you were chasing .....but I hope it helps in some way Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 7Oct 15, 2008 1:49 pm Quote: My ideal walk in has NO glass and is long enough to have the water contained in the shower area. I have seen a few like this & they are great, I wish I'd seen them when planning our house. The ones I've seen are a bit like the 1st pic of Paula's. Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 8Oct 15, 2008 5:08 pm Yeah I_Build... I've looked at many "walk-in" showers in magazines etc,but can never find dimensions... The top right one of your photo's I've seen before, and would love to know the dimensions of that, and whether it "holds" the water!!!
I've read somewhere that 1500mm is classed as the wet area radius from shower heads, so any opening should supposedly be more than 1500... I'd also like to just have tiled walls, rather than glass.. Glass is a pain to clean, and looks fairly ordinary after it's etched... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! I still think you would feel any breeze whether it is hot air or cold air due to your body being wet. Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 10Oct 15, 2008 7:50 pm chuth77 Yeah I_Build... The top right one of your photo's I've seen before, and would love to know the dimensions of that, and whether it "holds" the water!!! They will not hold any water if it has been tiled correctly and as for the dimensions they can be whatever size you want them to be. Some shower screen companies will have some standard sizes available but they can make screens to any size or shape you like Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 11Oct 15, 2008 8:50 pm We are having a walk-in in our ensuite this time similar to Paula's first photo but the wall will go all the way to the roof. There will be one shower rose coming from the ceiling for husbands like to get their heads wet and a wall outlet for ladies who hate getting one precious hair wet I look forward to no glass. Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 12Oct 15, 2008 8:57 pm I guess we are having a walk-in shower. Our ensuite shower is extra long and slightly wider than a normal shower. Originally our building sales consultant thought we would need special drain so that water would not pool but after talking to the engineers they decided there was a enough fall within the shower not to need it.
We have also asked for a shower curtain rail so that if there is a problem with water escaping from the shower area ( spray ) we can add a shower curtain. Ours is like the bottom two. we originally had the shower walls to ceiling but we've organised for the walls to go only as high as 2000mm we were worried about how efficient the exhaust would be if the shower was fully enclosed. and this will be completely tiled. No step up though. edit: I had a quick look on our plans and our ensuite shower is 1800 x 960 wide. The side wall looks to run about 1/2 way so the shower is open for approx 900 mm and then enclosed for the rest of that wall. SuH your setup sounds great. Would be great to not get your hair wet sometimes, and then other times you can stand under DH's rose and get soaked. Sounds wonderful. Have you selected tiles for it yet? Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 14Oct 16, 2008 5:11 pm I_BUILD chuth77 Yeah I_Build... Obviously the shower recess will have the correct fall to allow the water to drain easily... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Walk in Shower Feedback and Design Suggestions 15Oct 16, 2008 10:15 pm It would all depend on the design and size of the shower. As you can see there are many variations so some would tend to splash water outside the shower a lot more than others. So I guess design would play a big part in how well the water will be contained inside the shower.
