Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 31, 2010 9:31 pm I've been contemplating switching the double basin to the kids bathroom instead of the ensuite. What do you think? Pros and cons both ways please. I hate the morning fight over teeth brushing but we only have one bathroom now with 5 people but it's only the kids fighting and trying to learn patience which I anticipate won't ever resolve really Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 4Feb 01, 2010 6:26 am I doubt it would affect resale at all - I wouldn't think it's something that would be a deal-breaker for most people. A friend of mine has the exact setup you're considering, and it works well. She and her husband use the ensuite at different times, so don't need two basins in there anyway. The three teenage/adult children were far more of a problem, and the morning dramas have almost disappeared completely now. I wish I'd put an extra basin in the kids' bathroom - mine are being total PITAs right now! Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 5Feb 01, 2010 9:25 am hi, I have swapped our sinks over. I, too, couldn't be bothered with the squabbles. I am not at hand-over yet so I can't tell you how it will work, but I know it will work! Another reason I wanted to swap and have only 1 sink in our ensuite is that my OH is a bit of a slob so only 1 sink in there is less work to keep clean. Another point is I am solely on rainwater and the council wanted to know how many sinks/taps/showers/toilets we had in our plan,so the less plumbing points the better chance we had for the approval for our dwelling. I have told my DDs that when we are in the house it will be their responsibility to keep thier bathroom clean. I told them to think about what their friends would think when they come to visit. All my friends loved the sink swap idea!! Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 6Feb 01, 2010 9:37 am We'll be having two in the ensuite and one in the bath - and I wanted it the other way around, but we had space issues. I'd prefer two in the main bath. Less hassles over who left the toothpaste in the basin.... My house and my rants.... - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=26937 We are in!!!...and still unpacking. Thankfully there are always Tim Tams Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 7Feb 01, 2010 9:58 am Yep if we hadn't taken the ensuites in each bedroom route then I definitely would have chosen to have a double vanity in the main bathroom over one in the ensuite. Unless you only have one child there is always going to be squabbles over the vanity (speaking as a middle child in a family of three girls ) and there was always WW3 going on at teeth brushing / face washing times. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 8Feb 02, 2010 3:48 pm I think you should go with what suits you and your lifestyle. I have just built and installed double sinks in the ensuite as I was sick of having to go and get ready to go out first. Now hubby can be having a shave and I can be doing my hair etc at the same time. Its the best thing for us ever and I cant see me going back to single now. ( I think its like having an ensuite once you have had one it would be hard to go back to a single bathroom). I personally think 2 in the main bathroom is a waste of time as there is only one person in there at any one time, if we have visitors. But I suppose if you have kids at home it does sound practical for you and from what others have said seems to work well. So I would go with what your needs are at the present time Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 9Feb 02, 2010 4:44 pm Well, if I had to choose Id say double in main as hubby and I get ready at different times Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 10Feb 06, 2010 10:14 pm We put in two vanity units in the main bathroom area, one is in the bathroom the other is outside the toilet.(house plans on blog) That also gave the benefit when guest came over they didn't have to use the main bathroom downstairs. We went for a single in the ensuite but the basin is about 900mm long. I didnt, I had to fight with my 3 brothers. So the way I see it is I have worked hard for this house and earnt my right to my own basin, I'm not sharing with DH. When my kiddies are grown up they can have it they way the want... in their own house (I put a long above counter vanity in the main bathroom so 2 kids can still spit in the sink at the same time ) Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 12Feb 27, 2010 10:16 am Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 13Feb 27, 2010 10:46 am My sister bought a house which has two sinks in the kid's bathroom. My niece and nephew love it! No squabbles over mess as they are responsible for keeping the area clean. It is a luxury but if you do it without paying too much extra I'd go for it. Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 14Feb 27, 2010 1:17 pm Getting there, sorry, I dont think that large sink is a good idea - on the basis of water wastage, water conservation being an ongoing issue in Australia and things that you would fill the sink for, you are going to have to use so much more water each time to get the depth you need Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 15Feb 27, 2010 4:50 pm Helyn Getting there, sorry, I dont think that large sink is a good idea - on the basis of water wastage, water conservation being an ongoing issue in Australia and things that you would fill the sink for, you are going to have to use so much more water each time to get the depth you need I must be the only one who has never filled a bathroom sink before. Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 16Feb 27, 2010 5:13 pm We are a family of 5 too. Best thing I ever did (and my daughters have now thanked me for it) was change the large main bathroom to a three way (a result of someone's suggestion on this forum ) - WITH double sinks in main AND ensuite. You should try explore the idea for sure!!! progress viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20401 sculptures viewtopic.php?f=36&t=26607 pole trouble viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25988 Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 17Feb 27, 2010 5:23 pm gettingThere Haven't seen many of these around, wonder if one large sink would work out cheaper than two regular size ones... it reminds me of the sink in the girls toilet at my DD school, but a much posher version! Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 18Feb 27, 2010 5:25 pm it would be a waste of time for us as we never use the ensuite at the same time.. but for people who do use it at the same time I guess it is useful Re: Double basin in main or ensuite 19Feb 27, 2010 7:23 pm gettingThere Helyn Getting there, sorry, I dont think that large sink is a good idea - on the basis of water wastage, water conservation being an ongoing issue in Australia and things that you would fill the sink for, you are going to have to use so much more water each time to get the depth you need I must be the only one who has never filled a bathroom sink before. Well, not neccesarily filling it but say, to get 3 inches of water you would use so much more to get it in that trough than in a standard basin- washing kids faces, shaveing, soaking your hands... I don't think I even have a plug for it.. but I use an electric shaver.. (as the blade used to irritate my skin too much). I used to when I used a blade shaver but now I have no need.
