Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 15, 2020 8:53 am Hi, We moved into our new home and found that our master bedroom is very very cold. The bedroom is just above garage. As per my builder there is no insulation between ground floor first floor. The balcony doors are pretty standard. The floor and room is cold always. I am happy to spend little bit money to get the room more warm. But not sure what's the best way to do to keep the room bit warm. Any suggestions will be of great help. Above garage Insulation R2.5 walls. Vinyl flooring Has a balcony Facing south or south west(no sunlight) Thanks. There's not much you could do post construction now. Suggest , getting a split system installed for the room, get thick curtains installed, add some rugs to keep the room losing the heat. Floor to wall single glazed aluminium doors will be definitely drawing a lot of cold inside. Significantly more than your floor as cold air goes down and hot air goes up. Do you have a proper ceiling insulation above your bedroom? Re: Master Bedroom above Garage with Balcony very cold 7Jul 17, 2020 12:46 pm I know that our garage is quite cold because there is a gap around the garage door when the wind comes in. Have a look at putting some expanding foam into the gap and this would make the garage warmer and less cold air coming through your bedroom floor. I have now put embaseals on garage sides which is stopping the wind a lot. Also placed some polystyrene on doors. I think now that I sorted garage. The cold air is coming through balcony glass doors. I am thinking of speaking to by builder about commercial grade glass. Re: Master Bedroom above Garage with Balcony very cold 10Jul 23, 2020 10:22 am Get some decent insulation into your floor joists of the bedroom. That way it doesn't matter how cold your garage gets - door open /door closed, your bedroom should be noticeably warmer. What's in the ceiling of your bedroom? Stewie When you say insulation are you referring Rug or Carpet?. Ceiling of bedroom is roof with insulation. Re: Master Bedroom above Garage with Balcony very cold 13Jul 24, 2020 8:35 am Stewie D No, insulation is batts or similar installed between the floor joists. Stewie No, as per builder there is no insulation batts above garage and the bedroom flooring. Builder said its not mandatory. I would prefer to put insulation but not sure how much it would cost and builder is not supporting it. His view is put rug and curtains and air conditioning. Re: Master Bedroom above Garage with Balcony very cold 14Jul 24, 2020 11:09 am Ha, of course he'd say that. By far the easiest and probably most cost effective solution would be to install R2.5 - 3.0 batts between the floor joists. Of course the sensible thing to do as well would be to install a plasterboard ceiling in the garage after you install the batts. Both easy to do post-build. Stewie Depends how much direct sun it gets. Is there any shading (eaves or trees)?
