Saving many hundreds of dollars a year on the daily service charges alone, before even considering gas usage. Yep, did that 3 years ago. I would never ever have gas again and not primarily for financial reasons. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Moving away from ducted options and looking at split systems like this. https://www.daikin.com.au/our-product-range/ducted-system-air-conditioning Haven't looked at the costs yet. You've actually provided a link to the ducted system Re: GAS Ducted Heating + Addon Cooling Option 7Feb 27, 2020 11:02 am Thanks, which one from the Daikin range should I be looking at? Re: GAS Ducted Heating + Addon Cooling Option 9Mar 01, 2020 6:26 am So did a little more research. I am interested in a multi split system. However I like the look of vents and would prefer if possible to avoid the head unit in each room. I see there are the cassette units for larger rooms. Is there something similar for bedrooms which sits in the ceiling and not on the wall. I am looking for dual cooling and heating. Re: GAS Ducted Heating + Addon Cooling Option 10Apr 22, 2020 4:56 pm ddarroch I'd say you haven't done your research very well. Reverse cycle AC (heat pumps) are the most efficient form of heating. More efficient & cheaper than gas, & this gap is only likely to widen in the future. I'd never consider connecting gas for a new build. Many, many people with existing houses are removing gas entirely from their home. Saving many hundreds of dollars a year on the daily service charges alone, before even considering gas usage. Check out the "Me Efficient Electric Home" group on Facebook. Aussie group with over 11,000 members & growing. Lots of good advice there. Install solar PV on your roof & you can run your heating/cooling for free during daylight hours. No doubt, when battery prices decrease, you'll be able to heat/cool your home for free at any time. Oh, your house is huge. Cut it's size down to a decent size, & heating & cooling costs will decrease too. Savings could be invested in improving energy efficiency, solar PV, heat pump domestic water, increased insulation, better building sealing with wall wraps, improved windows, & window furnishings. The list could go on & on. Your wallet & the environment will thank you. ddarroch Thanks for your valuable suggestions. I am a first home builder so don't have much idea about the long term cost of heating based on gas vs electric and options available. Can you please suggest a couple of Good Reverse Cycle AC (Heat Pumps) unit with a good reputation, value for money and just a rough initial cost (That would really be awesome would help) Actually, The only reason we didn't select the "Reverse cycle AC (heat pumps)" because we didn't have much info about these units and because of the initial high cost as compared to the Gas ducted system even if we chose a 6-star heating unit. Plus several split aircon units + fans as an efficient cooling option. I'd be looking at these brands, weighing up efficiency (& other features vs cost). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Daikin, Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric (a separate company from MHI) & Fujitsu. The most efficient systems are ductless split systems (as ducts contribute to energy losses). But individual splits have an outdoor unit for each indoor unit. So if you have many indoor units this approach may not be the best, if you want to limit the number of outdoor units. In this case you may also want to look at ductless multi splits. Where one outdoor unit supplies multiple indoor units. I believe these aren't quite as efficient as individual split systems. You'd also have to consider what's cheaper, individual splits, or a multi split. You may end up with a single split or two downstairs, & a multi split upstairs. As noted above, along with the usual wall mounted indoor units, you can also get cassette units in the ceiling, or bulkhead units. Look good, but cost more I'd presume.
