Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 06, 2020 8:35 pm Hi! We are renovating our house and will have the following floor plan. I'm trying to think of the best place to put the return air duct that is out of the way. It was originally in the wall on the ground as per below. Our plan was to put it in void that we would make as per the red square below, however I want to hide it as much as possible. Could it be put in the ceiling on the "mud room" as per the blue square? Or does it need to be inside the house? So my next question is, does it need to be central to the house? Or can it go in the ceiling above the front door? Re: Can my return air box be positioned in the garage 3Jan 06, 2020 9:40 pm You haven't got the whole plan showing but I'd put it out near the back bathroom in the hallway. I'm assuming there are more bedrooms out back. Your AC installer will give you some guidance but putting them in hallways is pretty common. The only place I see out the back would eat into some of the cupboard space which the mrs doesn't want to do. I suppose I could put it in the ceiling out of the way near those bedrooms. They install the return air with a drop down filter. Putting it in the wall seems like a waste of space. Unfortunately, there are trusses right through the middle of the hallway outside the bedrooms.
