Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 17, 2019 6:09 pm Hey guys, Our roof attic got water damaged a couple months ago from a bursted hot water pipe. We had it fixed and also threw away the insulation batts that are water logged. Although 20% of our roof void is now without insulation and we would like to fix this as soon as possible. We originally thought to just add in insulation batts to where it’s currently missing, however we’re not sure what’s the R-rating of our existing insulation batts. Is anyone able to tell from looking at these pictures? Let me know if it’s helpful to take it from different angles. https://imgur.com/a/iHPQ3i1 Does the existing insulation look adequate or is it insufficient for our heating/cooling purpose. (We live in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia) At the moment, we’re contemplating whether to put up a whole new layer of insulation above the existing ones or not. It’s going to be really expensive for us to do this since our house is only single story but have a large roof attic (250 m2). And we are quite strained with budget at the moment since this is our first house. Alternatively we can just plug some insulation batts (R3 or R4) to where it’s currently missing. Is the savings in thermal efficiency over the years going to make up for initial cost of installation, if we choose to add insulation over our existing ones? Or is that too much of an overkill and we’re better off just plugging in insulation batts to where it’s missing? Sincerely appreciate your help on this matter! Thomas Re: Should we re-insulate our whole roof attic again? 2Nov 19, 2019 12:14 pm Your existing batts look like they'd be only R1.0 to 1.5. Usually the thicker the better. It will depend on how long you are thinking of staying as to the cost benefit ratio there but if it were me I'd get R3.0 or more up there. You would have a much cooler house in summer and warmer in winter. It may cost you more in the short term but you would save some on energy costs plus when you sell it is always a good selling point.
