Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 23, 2019 8:17 pm Hi everyone, We are about to start building our first home and trying to decide if we put the ducted in during the build or do it after to save money... I keep thinking it would be easier to do during the build but the builder will put his margin on it. Thoughts? BUILDING OUR FIRST HOME :x] Re: Installing Ducted Air 2Oct 23, 2019 9:29 pm I faced the same dilemma. It's just my wife and I, and I couldn't justify 20k on a low end cooling only unit that idles at 6kw at its lowest output (when it would just be cooling one room). So, we opted for a duct only option. It was about $4,500 which includes ten outlets, duct, electrical prewire, reinforcement in the ceiling where the unit goes and a slab and drain for the unit to sit on outside. I know i will get it if I ever have kids. but, being a 2 storey house, I never would have been able to add it later. Maybe that might suit you? You are right that it is a bit easier for the installer during the build but that won’t make it any cheaper with the builder We got a few quotes together during winter and locked in a good unit at a good price. Install took a day when we moved in during summer. Ours was a single story build might be a different story for a double. That’s quite a strong assertion don’t you think? This whole forum is flowing with tons of people who have said otherwise based on their individual experiences Re: Installing Ducted Air 8Jul 14, 2020 12:07 pm For what its worth, here is my experience.
I got my builder to install ducted ACTRON SRD173C/SRV171 system with 8 zones and was charged $11,010 for it. Most recently when outside temperature was 14 degrees, inside was 18.2 degrees, set point was 24 degrees and after the system was in operation in ESP/AUTO mode with one zone in operation for over an hour, the inside temperature increased by a mere 0.4 to 18.6 degrees. It never worked since it was installed in December 2016. My attempts to get it rectified have been in vain. The manufacturer is claiming it is installer fault. The installer is claiming it is builder fault. The builder is refusing to fix it notwithstanding a work order having been issued in July last year. I have issued a notice to the builder, installer and manufacturer to fix the system. I am not holding my breadth. Had I got my own installer after the building was completed, the outcome would have been very different I reckon.
