Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Sep 10, 2008 12:02 pm Hi All,
I'm currently having the debate with my partner as to what type of air con to get. i want evap (i.e. cheaper to run! ) and he wants the brivis ice refrigerated cooling! I have been doing alot of researching and there is alot of info at how cheap it costs to run evap, but there isnt alot of info at how much it costs to run refrigerated cooling. the system we are looking at getting is the brivis ice 17.6 kw to 12 duct points! I'm just wanting an indication as to how much it would costs per hour/day to run! Cheers, Sam Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 2Sep 10, 2008 11:54 pm Well, this should be relatively easy to figure out if you know how much your power company charges you per KWh, and the current draw from the unit.
I have not idea how much a 17 KW unit draws per hour, will a 17.2 KW unit will actually draw 17 KW per hour? So, figure out how much your power company costs and you can figure it out. From another website: http://www.airmaxair.com.au/faq.php#Q2 How much does it cost to run? Reverse cycle air conditioning is the most energy efficient method of heating or cooling your home. Running costs are strongly influenced by how long the air conditioner is running. Therefore an undersized air conditioning system will be significantly more expensive to operate than one that is sized correctly. On average a 55kW unit would cost approximately 70 cents per hour to run. Greg Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 3Sep 11, 2008 12:19 am gpierce On average a 55kW unit would cost approximately 70 cents per hour to run. Greg Think this website has a typo and they mean a 5kW system ... given that electricity is about 14 cents per kWh. Compare this to a standard pedestal fan running at 185W ... hmmm, bit of sustainable house design and decent shading can save a hell of a lot of money in the long run! Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 4Sep 11, 2008 4:25 pm Found this calculator website:
http://www.mhi-inc.com/Converter/watt_calculator.htm So, according to this, a 17.6 KW air conditioner would use 140 kilowatt hours in 8 hours. At .14 per KWh, that's about 20 bucks per 8 hours. You should be able to use the exact same calculator for your X KW Evaporative system:) Greg Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 5Sep 11, 2008 4:36 pm The answers are probably "A lot" and "More than Evap cooling".....but we're still getting refridgerated, 'cos that's what we prefer - personal choice!!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 6Sep 11, 2008 4:54 pm Thanks everyone for all of your help! it definatley adds weight to my arguement of getting evap, but i think i may lose this battle and we will probably end up going refrigerated!! Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 7Sep 11, 2008 4:58 pm Bonaire says on their website that evap cooling costs less than $0.14 an hour to run and refrigerated is $0.80.
http://www.bonaire.com.au/evaporativeco ... nning.aspx I did have some Brivis info here but can't find it. I think theirs said about $0.18 for evap and $1.00 for refrigerated. The price difference is huge! Exactly!! The cost for not running it when DW is hot far outweighs the cost to run it!! We ran ours all last summer and the bill was about $60 more than the winter bill we just had. I guess it was around $4 a day?? Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 11Sep 11, 2008 6:26 pm We had it installed with the house using CH and Dandy Air.
It is/was worth every cent IMO.. Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 13Sep 12, 2008 7:30 pm Bah to your eaves ....
Eaves are evil, nonsensical, good for nothing layabouts Dont start me Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 14Sep 12, 2008 10:20 pm Sorry I cant answer from personal experience but I built a website for an Air Con company recently and they've got some really useful info on it - including being able to calculate which unit suits you best
I'll be using it soon (well probably next year actually as we'll be strapped for cash when we move into our house next week and start the long drawn out reno project!!). http://www.penair.com.au Hope its useful Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 15Sep 13, 2008 1:36 am tygwyn, you do nice, easy to use websites. I think when we need turf (a long way off though) we might use the company you did the site for.
As for cooling, we're getting reverse cycle ducted air. I hate the hot, humid weather, so the air-conditioning is for me. My Mum will be living with us, and she feels the cold more, so the heating is for her. I know it's not cheap to run, but, might as well get what we want. Oh, and we have eaves. Judie Thanks Judie They're both really nice people actually that I did the sites for - the turf and the air con. Very friendly and down to earth. We might have to get turf soon too. The house we're moving into is an investment property at the moment and looks like one too!! It hasnt been looked after at all. We do the final inspection on Tuesday and get the keys on Wednesday and, as much as I'm looking forward to it...I'm dreading at the same as I dont know what state its going to be in!! Good luck with your air con Re: Cost of running refrigerated air con! 17Sep 14, 2008 9:27 am SammyJ Hi All, I'm currently having the debate with my partner as to what type of air con to get. i want evap (i.e. cheaper to run! ) and he wants the brivis ice refrigerated cooling! And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5943 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
