Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 29, 2009 8:15 am Hi all, We're in the process of getting quotes for a ducted air-cinditioning system, and it seems that many installer prefer to bundle the heating and air-conditioning units together using the same electricity source. I understand that it's easier for them to install these systems as one unit, but I'm concerned about the running cost of the ducted heating. Are they efficient to run and as good as the gas ducted heating systems ? I'm looking at ActronAir's ESP plus 15Kw or 17Kw systems and their heating systems are all 5 star energy rated. Just another question. It seems that the above systems require a signle phase to run. My builder adviced us to install 3 phase circuits. If get either of the above systems, will that make the 3 phase circuitry absolete ? Cheers Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 2May 29, 2009 11:32 am The Actron Air ESP plus 15kW and 17kW are both single phase units. Unless you need three phase for something else (arc welder?), then the three phase connection is not needed. Hope this helps? Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 3May 29, 2009 11:44 am electric heaters no matter how efficent will cost you more to run. In Vic you are best to get gas ducted heating with add on cooling. I say this because you will potentially use the heater for 3 months straight and the air cond for five days a year, Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 4May 29, 2009 11:53 am We Have just had Brivis HE30 Gas ducted heating with add on cooling and I highly recommend it. 5.5 star energy rating gas but not looking forward to running costs of the 15kw cooling. But at least it will work ALL the time in summer. Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 5May 29, 2009 12:07 pm Fridgy The Actron Air ESP plus 15kW and 17kW are both single phase units. In Vic you are best to get gas ducted heating with add on cooling. I say this because you will potentially use the heater for 3 months straight and the air cond for five days a year, That's great. Even my builder thought that an add-on would be the best option. I just got quoted for an ActronAir system that's not even in their website. Is that because it's an add-on ? Where do I find information about their add-on systems ? The add-on I got quoted for is the SRD190C Question: how many times did I mention the word 'add-on' in my post ? Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 7May 29, 2009 12:10 pm Check out: http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/re ... system.pdf As you can see, gas heating (in whatever form) is cheaper than electricity. For a MJ of energy, gas is about half the cost of electricity (NB 1 kWhr = 3.6 MJ). However, LPG is about 3x cost of Natural gas. Burning gas releases energy more efficiently than brown coal. Only a third of the energy contained in brown coal can be turned into usable electricity i.e. 3x more greenhouse gas generated for unit of energy delivered We don't have town gas so RCAC was the next cheapest option. If you combining gas with evaporative air con then ensure the ducts are appropriately insulated for both uses. Cheers Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 9May 29, 2009 12:13 pm dymonite69 If you combining gas with evaporative air con then ensure the ducts are appropriately insulated for both uses. Thanks dymonite. I will be considering the gas ducted heating system. Cheers Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 10May 29, 2009 1:17 pm The Actron Air SRD190 18.6kW is a new model replacing both the SRD181 and the SRD200. They haven't posted the new model on the net yet. So no it's not an add on! (now you got me saying it!) cheers Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 12May 29, 2009 5:33 pm Yes a gas ducted heater with add on airconditioning is the way to go but if you were to go all electric you are on the right path actronair is the way to go then. We mainly install Braemar gas ducted heater with a actronair add on. Re: To have gas or electricity ducted heating !! 13May 08, 2018 8:46 am Ductless Mini-Splits Are a Great Option... One of the best advantages to ductless mini-split systems is that you can control the temperature in individual rooms instead of having to heat or cool the entire house. Moreover, you can also have ducted mini-splits, if you really want. You also save a fortune on the installation costs and can use attic for storage.
