Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 12, 2017 1:48 pm Hi, I am looking for feedback from forum members who have both Ducted AC and separate Gas Heating. My address has gas in the street, and I already have 3phase power. We prefer Induction Cooktop, but a KDR may mean, adding Gas into the equation for BASIX points? If we were to get Gas, we would use it for: HotWater BBQ Internal Space Heater (How does AC Heating compare to Internal Space Gas Heater) With HotWater being the primary use, is it worthwhile getting Gas connected? Appreciate your advice. BTW i am in South West Sydney. Kind Regards GLO Re: Ducted AC & separate Gas Heating. Worthwhile having both 2Jun 12, 2017 7:21 pm We had 2 reverse cycle air conditioning individual units installed in the existing 2 bedroom unit we bought. We haven't used the gas heating yet this year and can't see any reason why we would use it again. Future steps will be solar hot water and replacing the oven and cook top so we can get rid of the gas meter. Worthwhile having both 3Jun 13, 2017 10:31 am AC heating is EXTREMELY efficient, with COP's (coefficient of performance) in the range of 3 to 5. This means they can use as little as one fifth the electricity as a normal electric heater to create the same amount of heat. When calculating the cost of heating, normal electric heating is 100% efficient, gas is 80-90% efficient, while AC heating efficiencies range from 300-500% (the higher the COP the better). You'll also need to convert units, as gas is measured in MJ, while electricity is measured in kWh. For AC's, look for inverter models, splits are more efficient than ducted systems, & generally smaller units are more efficient than larger ones (though you don't want to undersize badly).
If you like your induction cooktop I'd be staying away from gas all together, & going the all electric route. Save on the costs of the gas connection, the monthly bills. Invest that money in solar PV. Then you can heat your house & water (either an undersized electric element or an efficient heat pump) for free. The all electric house is the way of the future, gas will be going the way of the dinosaurs, like all fossil fuels. Re: Ducted AC & separate Gas Heating. Worthwhile having both 4Jun 13, 2017 1:17 pm Got ducted actron add on air con and ducted 6 star gas heating, works efficiently, also solar, gas hot water, and micro inverter panel solar panels, use heating 3 times more than aircon has would most homes in Victoria and tasmania, my last gas bill was $88,next will be 2.5_3 times, using heater every day for 5_7 hours for 37 square home, Depends what state you live in as in warmer climate, ac reverse cycle us better due to lower need of heating.
