Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 11, 2008 5:41 pm Hi all,
As a lot of you know we are going to build in Wallan and it gets very cold there but does it get hot? We have double glazing for the house, good insulation and our floor coverings will be tiles except for carpet in the bedrooms, playroom and library. The house is single story. The living areas face south and east. I'm wondering about the need for evaporative cooling as I don't know if it gets really, really hot up there and what type of heat. (humidity etc.) Our evaporative cooling is working out very expensive (due to needing 9 vents ) and I'm just wondering if we might be better to hold off and see if we actually need it. I've never had evaporative cooling before and have managed (albeit with a lot of sooking ) but I've also never lived in a house with double glazing and good insulation. So how necessary is it I wonder when these other factors are taken into account? Any opinions welcome. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Would be a lot more cost-effective and energy-efficient. Aside from the fact that I don't like evap cooling... Re: Evaporative cooling in Wallan: Necessary or not? 3Aug 11, 2008 6:00 pm Donuts if we have anything I think it will be evap as I like the idea of being able to have a door open with DS and various animals in and out all day and I find other methods too drying and too icy .
But I'm just wondering if we can get away without it and put some of the money into even more measures to combat the heat? Even better insulation etc. I can think of better things to spend 7.5k on. You will have a few very hot days and nights, but should be bearable (especially if you do build the alfresco on the south side and surround it with ferns etc). Re: Evaporative cooling in Wallan: Necessary or not? 6Aug 11, 2008 6:34 pm Also worth thinking about insulating your internal walls as well.
We put polyester batts in most of our internal walls at frame stage and wish we had done every wall. Only helps a little with heat but really changes the acoustics! Re: Evaporative cooling in Wallan: Necessary or not? 7Aug 15, 2008 9:23 pm OK I had contract meeting today. Still not right but that's another story. Not to worry though, I keep taking their stuff ups as an opprtunity to change/add things. I dare them to charge me a variation fee! They mentioned it but it didn't eventuate!
Anyway, I deteted the evaporative cooling (7.5k) and added sarking (2.5k). We do have a bush fire threat in Wallan. Not a major one, but as we are on a hill embers are a potential problem. So the sarking is a little bit of piece of mind as well as insulation help. So I will be taking on summer with double glazing, sarking, good insulation and external shading. No cooling system!!! May the force be with me! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Evaporative cooling in Wallan: Necessary or not? 8Aug 16, 2008 12:24 am at the end of the day if u do feel 'hot', then u can just install a small spilt system in the bedroom, at least you will have a good night sleep...
