As part of the demolition of our rear section the plumber came over to fit off the gas line to the kitchen. He said that the old gas 3/4 inch gas lines in the garden bed running for about 5 metres from the kitchen to the lounge room were rusted and he could smell gas in the soil. The gas line continues under the house under the lounge room, then outside to the meter which is directly outside the lounge room. He suspects the gal under the house is ok as it was not in the soil. He also said that he could not attach to gal so he would need to install a new line from the meter to the house. He said that if we were planning to have central heating, the 3/4 inch lines would be no good. (We are planning on central heating and air con - too not sure on the type of air con yet) The meter is a the front of the house in a garden bed and supplies a gas heater via a T in the lounge at the front (about 2 metres from the meter), then it needs to go off to the new central heating and new kitchen. He quoted $1700 (inc GST) for the job and said that the copper lines were $200 a length. So my questions are: 1. Is 3/4 inch gal too small for central heating? 2. How does $1700 sound for this type of job? 3. Is there anything else I should ask him to do? Thanks Dreamy Re: Plumbing: Rusted gas lines 2Aug 10, 2008 5:21 pm Re the Galv gas pipes - yep I had to install a new line when I installed a gas water heater so it could give the volume.
As for cost - that sounds about what I paid per metre. And galv pipes tend to rust inside too - so that restricts their internal size as well. Ask him to hide the new pipe so some rat does not cut it off and steal it at a later date.
