Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 07, 2008 9:29 pm Hi all!
this is only my second post so i'm sorry if i've posted this in the wrong area. Basically we are building a home - or at least will be.. we are still in planning stage. The home we are looking at is about 227 square metres.. not including the garage or outside alfresco area. We are not sure if we should go ducted reverse cycle (inverter) or go with gas ducted heating and evap cooling. .. .. would appreciate anyones advice on this as most air cond people have conflicting advice. Thanks Mel Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 2Aug 07, 2008 9:34 pm from listening to the heating/cooling people on the radio (when they get experts in) evaporative cooling really is only well suited to Melbournes climate, everywhere else is too hot for it to be properly effective.
Also from a firned who is a refrigeration/air con electrician with a big name company, evap cooling units are basically full of mould and nasty bacteria, and they need to be regularly bleached to clean it. That would be a huge concern for me So I'd go split system for cooling and ducted heating. Gas heating by far!!!! So much cheaper than the ducted inverters for HEATING, Evaporative cooling I am not so keen on myself but again cheap to run, In my experience evaporative coolin is not as efficient as the inverters, and if it's a really hot and humid day almost useless. Personally I went for inverter for cooling and gas heater for heating but that doubling up really. No no no! Evaporative cooling is suited to hot dry weather but not well suited to humid or coastal weather. It will work far better in Mildura and Shepparton for example than in Melbourne. But in Melbourne itself it will work better in Tarneit for example than the bayside suburbs. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 5Aug 08, 2008 3:17 am My brother has evap cooling in Roxby Downs (outback SA) and it works reasonably well even though temps get very hot but very dry. It is pretty uselss in humid weather (which they don't get)
Haveing said that, I don't think it holds a candle to refig cooling, although it is cheaper. If cost was an issue I would rather do 2 or 3 rooms with split sytem refig individual coolers than the whole house in evap: when its very hot you can always live in a few rooms comforatbly (children sleep in lounge room for example) and I think that is more benifit than whole house partly effective. JMO. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 6Aug 08, 2008 11:28 am I would like to know this as well. I know in Qld they're not so good, but what about Perth? We were told by someone, that the evap. works great, but someone else will say, its not so great. I haven't been into houses with evap/refrig sytems to 'test' so to speak. So can I have some Perth peoples views please. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 7Aug 08, 2008 2:10 pm We live in Melbourne and have evaporative cooling and we LOVE it.
It is not as cold as refrigerated, but it is not as drying either. I love the fact that you can leave all the windows open, it gives a really nice, cool breeze. Last summer when it was 40 degrees outside, it was a very pleasant 24 in our house. You probably also should include the cost of running your chosen system as well the environmental impact of each choice - I am no expert but there is plenty of information out there. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 8Aug 08, 2008 5:32 pm I lived in a 2 storey t/house with evap cooling in melbs and i didn't like it at all, however that could have been the placement of the ducts - only had 2 downstairs, but even upstairs always felt hot, maybe house design was bad? not sure.
I preferred to put the fans on. in our new one we'll get a split system in the open plan living area and ceiling fans in there and everywhere else. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 9Aug 08, 2008 5:41 pm Looks like it could be a personal preference thing, again! We also live in Melbourne, and chose not to take the $5k Evap system as part of our PD promo, even though it was the cheap option, and we got nothing for not taking up that option, but we prefer refridgerated air con , and have heard from others (friends) that it's a bit of a pain - having to have windows open, and everything gets damp and traps the dust. just moved this into the heating forum. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 12Aug 19, 2008 3:24 pm Hi,
We have evaporative cooling and live in a Melbourne Bayside suburb. We built our new house last year and spent last summer enjoying the evap. cooling. I have to say it was fantastic. This is the first time that we have had this type of cooling system. What I loved about it is that the air in the house felt clean and fresh as the windows have to be kept open. The house was a lovely comfortable cool without being too cold. I found that even on the humid days it still worked well. It has to be much healthier than the drying effects of other air cons. I love it and will always have evap cooling. Spoilt princess Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 13Aug 19, 2008 3:50 pm Monkeyupatree.....We had evap at the last 2 homes and apart from the week over xmas when it was dry very hot wheather it worked perfectly and for that week we were lucky enough to have a pool and we coped(and I was 81/2 months pregnant at the time)....I digress
We talked about the fact that it would have been nice just for that week to have gotten a split in the living area...but again it wasn't for long that we were uncomfortable and we had gas for heating in winter... Really a very individual choice though, some people hate the idea of "artificial" cool air and not "fresh" air. In our next house I like the idea of reverse cycle so I can have cooling and heating in the different zones. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 14Aug 19, 2008 8:41 pm monkeyupatree
we also had evaporative ducted through out our house in Perth ( joondalup) Ours worked very well and my folks also have one and theirs also works well. Partly it's a preference thing. I really like having the occasional window open at least part way. I dislike intensely a closed house and the dryness that you get with refrigerative aircon. We also had ceiling fans in 2 rooms and on the few days aircon didn't work well on its own we found having the ceiling fans on made it work much better. We will be putting ducted evaporative aircon in down here if we need it. The rental we are in atm has a split single room aircon. I dislike the sound of it running. It isn't loud but I find the sound of it irritating and it doesn't work well enough even in a single room. My inlaws have a small split system and again I find it noisy. Others obviously don't have a problem with theirs. Re: Evap or reverse cycle.. need some advice please! 15Aug 20, 2008 7:40 am Another input from Perth, as mentioned above it depends on the climate and personal preference. It works very well in dry hot conditions, useless in humid areas. We have had an evaporative system since 1994 and I think it is great. We live 3.5km from the beach, our temps are 5-7 degrees lower than those inland, even 5km east. We hardly ever turn the actual cooling on but we have the ventilation going once the Frementle Doctor (our sea breeze to non Perthites) arrives.
