I've just purchased a block of land that has an old cottage on it, the ceiling space in the cottage is half bedroom loft, half store room. At the moment there is basically no insulation other then some tattered sarking. I'm planning on removing the floor of the store room to expose the rafters which means I can't insulate at the ceiling level (it's a small cottage so this extra space will make it feel much larger) but I also want to add some insulation.
I believe the current sarking is tattered because the rafters are on 900mm centers and there is no supporting mesh. My current plan is to remove the roofing iron add some wire mesh to support new aircell insulation, add the aircell insulation then replace the roof.
That should give me a good vapor barrier and a little bit of insulation, that then leaves me the depth of the rafters (90mm) to add additional insulation.
I'm looking at adding some 75 mm earth wool (http://www.knaufinsulation.com.au/en/co ... nket#tab_1) that will be flush with the inside edge of the rafters.
So in the end I should have:
External roof
aircell insulation
wire
airgap
75mm of earthwool
internal ceiling cladding (probably corrugated iron)
Seeing as I've never installed insulation before is what I'm planning to do "dumb" or is it about right?
