Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 2Aug 25, 2016 2:24 pm Evaporative cooling is cheap to buy(which is why its popular with project builders) and run but in my opinion not very effective. See this link for more: http://anewhouse.com.au/2012/01/cooling ... e-cooling/ Reverse cycle air conditioning is more expensive, but more effective, and is an economic way to heat a house. Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 3Aug 25, 2016 10:23 pm Depends where you live. If it's a humid climate evap isn't nice or effective. I like the feel of evap over dry aur if refrigerated aircon and in WA it's ok for maybe 70 % of summer but fails big Time over about 35... Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 4Aug 28, 2016 11:18 pm IMHO evap just doesn't cut it when you really need it on those crazy hot days that are 35+. Also when you forget to turn it off and a summer storm hits, it can make the house REALLY humid. My parents house had evap and I lived with it for quite a few years. It was 1000% better than nothing, but personally I prefer refrigerated cooling so you know it'll cool effectively when you really need it. Also not great when really hot. Split is a better option if not a cooler climate. Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 6Sep 07, 2016 8:17 am We had both in our old house and the evap is great most of the time, and whilst it does help on really hot days, air con is much better for those days. We are going to have evap in our new house, but may install a large air con in the main living area later on if we feel we need it. We have the same plan, we'll see how the evap handles this summer and make a call if it's really only 4-5 days it cant keep up is it really a huge issue? Our Build Thread - JG king Memphis Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 8Sep 16, 2016 7:31 pm I prefer evaporative cooling for a greenhouse. Evaporative cooling is very much energy efficient compared to other ones. The more you feed your mind with positive thoughts, the more you can attract great things into your life Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 10Jan 18, 2017 2:13 pm Evap works best in DRY climates. We've got evap in our house in Canberra and it seems to work well. Today, while the outside temp was 35, it's 23 inside with the evap on the lowest fan speed. We do have roof, wall and under floor insulation, which helps. Pros - effective in dry climates. Draws in fresh air rather than recycling the air inside the house. Cheap to run, it's just a fan and water that keeps some big pads wet. Quiet because the fan is outside on the roof. Cons - not effective in humid climates. Has limits on how much it'll cool down the house, I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the max temp drop to expect is around 16-18 degrees with a very efficient system - I could be wrong here though. As it draws in fresh air it means you need to leave a window/door open while it's turned on. One feature we use a lot is just having the fan on the lowest setting over night without the cooling (water turned off), so it's just pulling in the fresh air while we're asleep. That alone helps a lot, and as it's very quiet it's perfect. Hope that helps. P.S> in winter we put covers over the vents - http://www.heatsaver.com.au/ cheap, effective and don't look bad either. Re: Evaporative cooling or split system? 11Feb 09, 2017 2:25 pm The big plus for evaporative air conditioning for me is that it gives a complete change of home air about every two minutes so if cooking cabbage or other nasty smelling things, odours gone almost immediately. And as another poster mentioned, we also run fan only at night for night purging to start the day with a pleasantly cool house.
