Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 06, 2016 7:31 am Doing a reno to a 40-year-old brick veneer home that currently has the original batts in the roof. I'm assuming it's best to do the lights first so the new batts can be fit snugly around them, but would like some confirmation. Also, will the new batts simply be stacked on top of the old ones (which are probably inefficient and ineffective now) or do I request the old ones be taken out? Thanks in advance for any advice. Re: What goes in first, downlights or roof insulation? 2Aug 11, 2016 4:16 pm Can go either way. Most important thing is to ensure the downlights used CAN be fitted closley to or fully encased in insulation. Some can be covered 100%, some can be fitted tightly, but not on top and some need clearance all round. Just depends upon the model used. Have a look at the link for the rating descriptions: nzei.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/Downlight-FAQs-V6.pdf It is a NZ document but applies here too. As for the insulation, old insulation may not be as effective as new, but no harm in putting new over old. It will increase the rating, but by how much all depends. I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect. It will be still very interesting to see the state of your framing after 10-15… 10 23080 Hey guys building a new place through a volume builder and just wondering if i should complain to the site supervisor as we just had plasterboard installed.
